I will be honest, I sometimes still feel like an outsider when discussions start talking about old, lore, the old campaign, or musings that occurred in the prior edition. Without a good resource that's easy to keep up with, it can be very intimidating. It's the same in other games with a long history, novels, or multiple editions. However, it seems to be more pronounced here because of the love that a lot of folks had with the prior campaign and the secrets that came from that period of time.
It's good to hear that. Sometimes I forget. My general assumption is that the majority of people who play A:RPG are all part of the core players from the old campaign.thats certainly true for a lot of people but it's not universal.
One of the greatest strengths of the campaign is that it's not a plain vanilla tale of evil orcs and Giants. It's also one of the barriers because plain vanilla orcs and Giants are the easiest things to step into.
IME most of the background from the last campaign stays in the background. It helps illuminate why some things are the way there are, and it's another source for speculation. But very few mods or plot arcs touch to heavily on "what went before" without also covering the old material. An exception might have been Sabinius "the Fat Coryani" who people in the old campaign knew was a villain (albeit a charming one in LARPs). Still even he showed his true colors pretty early as the Primarch of a new church, and no doubt ::sigh:: a future Saint of Milandir.
As one of the unofficial keepers of old knowledge part of why i post is to keep that knowledge in the player base. I hope no one stays out of discussions because the volume of material is intimidating. Jump in. We're friendly as a rule. And we're sometimes wrong too. You don't need a PhD in Arcanis Lore to add interesting twists on speculation.
