When you sustain a spell do you and the target have to remain in place?
If the target moves, can you still sustain as long as the spell is still within range, or does that matter?

Let's take Bleed as an example. I cast within range, it hits, but before I can Sustain it, the target moves. I assume the spell effect follows so that after my four ticks, it reattacks?

I guess overall, I've never gotten a handle on how a sustained spell works - at least, ones that are not AoE (e.g., Storm of Knives).

any insight is helpful - thanks!

if the target moves, but stays in range, there is no change, so yeah it just re attacks at that point.

so as long as they are in the area of your spell it doesn't matter

If the target moves, then you move then sustain, does that work? Or, does the decision to sustain have to be made as soon as the tick comes up.

Example:
Tick 1: I cast Bleed, it hits
Tick 3: Target moves outside 30'
Tick 5: Time to sustain, but target is out of range. I'm SOL, or can I incidental then sustain?

Another question, if I sustain 3 times, my strain becomes 12, total, correct?

Last question.
Once it misses, you can no longer sustain, correct? So if on 5 I had missed my attack roll vs. Fort, the sustain ends and I take the now 8 strain?

Thanks!

1 then you move then sustain, does that work?
It really depends on the judge and the spell, there is nothing in the rules to allow or disallow such an action.
My personal ruling would be yes for single target spells 100% of the time and yes/maybe on AOE spells depengin on how they were use and how you were moving(there is the potential for abuse)

2 if they are in the Range of the spell it hits, if you moved yourself or if your cart was rolled over to be in range it doesnt matter to me , just that you are in range.

3 I don't see anything in the rules about strain applying to sustains, I assume that the strain is applied after you finish sustaining a spell, and not added every time you sustain a spell, so that your spell ends with 4 strain, no matter how many times you sustain it.

4 once an individually targeted spell misses you can no longer sustain it (as for how much strain you take look above)

After looking again, I don't see accumulated Strain, either. So conceivably, you could:

-Cast a Sustained, single target, spell on 1 +4(4)
-Up again on 5, but the target moved so you follow, basically holding the spell (speed 4 to move, but no spell effect because you can't do both unless incidental puts you in range)
-Up again on 9 and now back in range, roll again using the Sustain option +4(4)

Then again, if started the cast with the +30' option, you'd be in pretty good shape.

My rule is that if they do more than incidental, then they cannot sustain the spell. After all, incidental movement is NOT an action (it is combined with an action), but all other forms of movement IS an action. You cannot Perform an action, then do a completely different action, then sustain the first action because you elected to NOT continue the first action. What you can do is Cast the spell, then on your next action incidental up to 10' and then sustain because that is part of the sustaining action. If the target moves beyond the range of your spell and the 10' incidental, then the spell is done and you take your strain.

I agree with cody, its pretty specific , sustain the spell or end it, you cant take a different kind of action in between sustains, even if its just movement.

incidental movement is fine tho since you can add that to other actions

and on further thought, Im more comfortable with AOE and incidental movement
