Speaking of literacy, the primer states that the only way to gain literacy is by either playing a race that starts off literate, taking a background that grants literacy, or giving up one of your character's total languages known to gain literacy.

What about the Feat Linguist (pg. 167 of the 5e PHB)? It states you 'studied languages and codes', granting +1 Int, gaining three languages of one's choice, and the ability to create written ciphers (wouldn't this course of studies make one literate?). Was this feat overlooked?

Since the primer was so focused on character creation the unspoken assumption behind that passage about literacy is that it only applies at character creation. It should read that the only way to gain literacy at character creation is through race, background or give up a language. When leveling up your character, the Linguist feat is a valid option and would grant literacy.

It's a good point to raise and something we can clarify in the full 5e book.

Hi all

Quick question (well two)

If we have played a module in ARPG and then create a 5th ed character and play the mod. Do we get a replay or full credits?

Just found another possibility granting literacy, but it is very class specific. It involves the Warlock class and its Eldritch Invocation feature: Eyes of the Rune Keeper (pg. 111 of the 5e PHB). Once (if) this feature is taken, the Warlock can read all writing. Should/Would this not grant literacy?

If this ability is allowed in the 5e Arcanis game (I need to review the Warlock class as it has been the one I've shown the least interest in), I believe it very specifically grants literacy as per what you stated.

Found a possible discrepancy in the Primer regarding the Dwarf. On pg. 22 of the Primer, under Dwarf Common Traits, the excerpt on Speed, it says: "Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor."

In 5e, Heavy Armor doesn't reduce Speed. They do, however, all grant disadvantage on Stealth checks. Is the Dwarf trait an error or is it a feature of Heavy Armors being implemented in to Arcanis 5e?

Sorry you got that impression, however, this was never the intention.

That's was included in error.. ignore that line.

We will update the primer to remove it

I would assume it gives what it says - the ability to read any writing. It does not give literacy in every language. You can read anything, but you can only speak and write the languages you know.

Page 48 Variant Former Legionnaire Background under armor it refers to Lorica Squamata (chain mail). Lorica Squamata was scale mail. The chain mail was referred to as Lorica Hamata. A minor thing that can be fixed later but it jumped out at me when I read it this morning. :)

OF course that begs the question do they mean the medium armor "chain shirt" which more closely matches what the real world legionnaires wore OR the "chain mail" armor in the book with makes me think of a Norman style chain hauberk.

Personally I assume chain shirt. But this is Arcanis so I wonder what the official ruling is. Thanks!
