I thought I would start a thread in case anyone had questions about new material from the blessed lands book. I'll start!

The Rat Catcher class is very clearly open to males. It has an image of a male rat catcher, the example of a veteran one is a male, yet... It requires either Anointed Priest of Saluwe or Holy Champion of Saluwe to qualify. Both of these paths are divine casters of Saluwe. Divine Casters of Saluwe are not allowed to be male. How are there male rat catchers?

Ultimately this is a Henry Question, but. . .

1) There is no MECHANICAL reason why a Rat Catcher cannot be male. The cultural objection to male priests of Saluwe' is a Coryani trait, and the Rat Catcher is found throughout the lands of man (Nation: Any human nation). However, in Coryan you are correct that it would be vanishingly rare to find an Anointed Priest of Saluwe' who is male

2) I do not believe that the objection to Males in the Saluwean clergy extends to Templars and Holy Champions except in specific instances. I believe the Verdant Champion Order of the Saluwean Holy Champions is woman-only, but a generic Holy Champion I do not believe is restricted.

The Holy Champion Path requires the Templar background or the Templar Itinerant. While they grant access to DSC, spellcasting it is not required. You could easily have a Martial Templar, Holy Champion of Saluwe who's male with 0 spellcasting and no desire to go that route. The Anointed Priest(ess) provides a different route for female Divine characters of Saluwe.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

They do gain access to a special spell later in their progression, as that is a 'secret spell' of the Order. That said, not all Rat Catchers are that high of a level, so the knowledge of this spell is probably more closely regulated (or available to less-restricted societies).

Hello,

Priests of Saluwe' continue to require being a female. That prohibition does not extend to ALL Holy Champion Orders, as clearly the Rat Catchers can be both male and female.

To be a male Rat Catcher, you'll have to go the Templar/Holy Champion route, not the Divine route.

OK, on June 22, 2015 it was said in the druid thread that:

I just re-read the passage on Templars and after giving it some thought, I'd have to say no. Given that male Templars of Saluwe' would not be taught their specific Cants, they can't really be Templars. Same goes for female Illiirites.

I'll make a point to add this to the errata.

(You'll note that it now states that only Males can be Templars to the Fire Dragon.)

So it seems in the past that males could not learn any cants, so they couldn't go the Templar route. I assume this means that males can become divine casters of Saluwe by being Templars now? It's the only thing that explains the path, since the first tier power, rebuke vermin, requires the ability to cast rebuke first, and the second tier gives a spell, neither of which any male would be able to do unless as Templars they could acquire divine spell casting.

This seems to go against what you were saying about the druids, since it would be easy for the druids to be an order of Templar divine casters of Saluwe.

I had heard at Origins that the Sama were going to become a playable race with the release of this book. Was that just a baseless rumour to begin with, or was there a change by PCI before the release?

Yep, you're correct - it does contradict my previous statement.

Let me think about how I can make round this square.

I considered making both the Sama and the Ibon new playable races, but (largly from feedback fom the Development Team) decdied against it.

Thanks for the clarification Henry...although I can't imagine why the Ibon didn't become a playable race ;)
