 Post subject: Non-Casters and summoning spell runes

Question...

Can a non-caster put a summoning spell rune, specifically elemental guardian, on a weapon and gain the benefits of the summoned elemental? I ask because, Acturis would like to have a pet earth elemental around camp for digging holes and setting fence and hitching posts. After all, he needs a corral to keep all his horses in when he stops for the night and digging post holes himself is below his Coryani pay grade. Besides having a servant that can simply will the holes open and closed each morning and night, is just plain cool.

I believe the answer is yes, you can. The Spell Rune allows you to functionally cast the spell without actually casting it, and you would gain the benefits of that spell. Of course, Elemental Guardian is an Elder Spell, and how many Elder runesmiths do you know?

Don't have my books with me...heading to a Muse concert...but iirc you can only put a basic spell in a spell rune. I believed Elemental Guardian is a binding spell.

I assume 'unique' means Exotic or Secret, but this is the only restriction I can see for the rune for Base, Sustained, etc.

So, I think you are right Cody, I can only use that spell rune on a wand. So, I then have to ask, what is the bear minimum that Acturis needs to use that spell rune on a wand? Does he need prestidigitation with an edritch source? Rudimentary Casting? Arcane spell casting? Or can he use the spell rune on a wand as a stand alone single use item?

I think anything that specifically makes him choose a Source that normally uses a wand would qualify him to use a wand with the Spell Rune.

So if I understand it correctly Prestidigitation alone allows a PC to declare and eldritch source?

Ok. so assuming that that is correct I will move on to my next question....

If I plan to use the elemental to dig holes and trenches. Is it fair to assume an Earth Elemental can dig a single 5'*5'*5' hole, with a 5'*5'*5' berm on one side as a single demanding action? Keep in mind the Elementals Burrow Speed is 20' Feet. So they clearly can dig faster than I am asking, but if I'm asking it to be careful, it seems that would require an interruptable action.

As for why, Acturis doesn't feel safe in the wild unless his camp is fortified. Harkens back to the comfort and safty of the legion's command section. Any how there have been too many midnight attacks of late. (Curse you mod writers as even the Inns aren't safe at night) So, I'm mostly trying to bench mark how much time it would take to fortify a marching camp in the Coryani style.

Sounds like the module writers now need to write in more midnight flash floods that only harm those camping in 5x5x5 holes with 5' berms around them to hold in the water...

Though that does make me wonder if an similarly summoned air elemental or something could be used to divert rain and keep you dry. Seems like something some kind of elemental should be able to do in a light or moderate rain, and it would be a really cool visual effect that keeps you comfortable, while at the same time screaming "harvest me now, ymandrakes!" Bou won't they be disappointed when they grab you and take you back only to find out its a silly rune on a wand. I bet they'll give you all kind of tentacles and stuff after that.

Note that using a Spell Rune on a wand is not the same as being able to use a wand to boost your own casting (the effects are different). A Martial with no Arcanum skill at all can use a Spell Rune.

A Fine Rune is a utility elemental (1 Stamina)
An Exceptional Rune is a combat elemental (with T.1 bonuses; not very useful by the time you can get it).
A Legendary Rune would add nothing due to the adaptations available and CTN limit.


Finding an Eldritch Runesmith however...

It may be paranoia, but my head is full of wispers of a campaign staff conspiracy....
