Post subject:  Yhing Hir Culture and Marriage

In a recent game we began to wonder about Yhing Hir culture. The question that came up was strangely about whether Yhing Hir follow a monogamous or polygamous family structure. Possibly the cultural norms change from Yhing Hir tribe to tribe. I don't really know. Most of the Yhing Hir involved are Vanomir.

In the game a married Yhing Hir found that his wife's brother had been killed leaving his wife a widow. Is it reasonable in Yhing Hir society for him to marry her rather than leave her as a widow?

Is there a society in 'real-world' that I might look to with this sort of question?

The closest real-world tribes to the Yhing Hir are the Turkic people, specifically of about 500 CE to 1300 CE, and the Mongols from about 1200 CE to 1500 CE.

Thanks Cody

And based on what I have read about Turkic people I think that having multiple wives was commonplace. So with this as a basis for Yhing Hir customs I would say that amongst Yhing Hir you will find polygamy.

The Shamanism amongst the Turkic people seems to suit the Primal source of magic pretty well too.

Just talking about Yhing Hir and Hinterlands in General and the tribes, and maybe this needs it's own thread. A summary -
Vanomir - typical Yhing Hir - Capitol is Sicaris - tribal lands presumably around Sicaris
Hurkomir - largely mixed with Pengik - tribal lands around the Pricklespur forest
Khur Gi - closely resemble Khitani - no mention of tribal lands, but known to Milandir and Canceri, so presumably near these borders
Takomir - fine mounted archers and scouts - tribal lands around the Bleak Coast - dwelling in Jappa and Pearlspar

All of these peoples speak Yhing Hir predominantly I would expect.
What of the Erdukeen? Are they of Yhing Hir stock? Mixed stock I would think. They speak Erdukeen which does not use the Khitani alphabet like Yhing Hir.
What of the Skohir? What are their origins? They speak Skohir, and their language is not listed under the Linguistics skill, but is under nationality - Hinterlands. Is the language Khitani derived, or different?

These are Hinterland people, but I'm not quite sure about them. Different languages, different people.

Erdukeen are the descendents of followers of the Sword of the heavens who relocated there after his fall, thus they are ethnically and linguistically distinct from the rest of the Hinterlands. That isn't to say that there was no interbreeding, but I suspect it was minimal. Because of this, val'Virdan are probably overly represented in their population relatively speaking to most.

Skohir are descended from what are essentially vikings. They appear to predate the arrival of the gods of man on Arcanis, with some motherland off the map somewhere. They generally do not have shaman, but instead priests of the GoM, primarily Yarris. I suspect we will be learning more about them in the future.

You mention one race of man, but don't ask about them- the Pengik. They also appear to predate the arrival of the GoM, and unlike most humans appear elementally attuned so there are interesting guesses about their origins.

What I always find myself wondering about with the Yhing Hir and other tribes of the Hinterlands is, what does the population of Vals look like in their population? Obviously there are lots of val'Virdan in Erdukeen. Probably no vals in the Pengik. Are there val Skohir? Yhing Hir? How does ethnic val work with the "color coding" of the val that all the val of a family look similiar? Does a val'Assante Yhing Hir (if they exist) look like a Coryani val'Assante? It's important for character concept continuity since I would look oddly at someone playing a val Yhing Hir right now. Since they Yhing Hir are descended from the Khitani, are there any Uls running around in their population? It seems like we've had enough contact with them that should have been noticed already if there are. But if there aren't, why aren't there?

Like the Western Lands, the Hinterlands remain an area we as players have not spent a huge amount of time with. Post Crusade I feel like we have a pretty good feel for the Khur Gi. They weren't front and center but they got plenty of screen time.

And the Vanomir are the poster children for "rides a horse, lives in a clan." So I think they are fairly well covered as well.

The others are essentially just names to me...like the Harn people in the League of Princess (...the who? ohh, they gave rise to the val'Baucisz. What happened to the rest of them?...They live in Biharn. That's not especially close to Metra by League standards...::scratches head::...okay).

I would not expect uniformity among the Tribes in terms of marriage traditions (or any other traditions). For example consider what we know about religion in the Hinterlands. We know a few clans are fairly devout to Mother Church teachings. Most clans pay some kind of lip service to both MC and elemental/spirit powers. Some clans are primarily devout to spirits alone. And that's just what I've seen in the Vanomir & the Khur Gi. So in general I would do what you want with "your" clan and try not to worry too much about what the rest of the Hinterlands is doing.

Ken asked what do vals look like in the Hinterlands. Much like where they do elsewhere I would imagine. Are you val'Virdan? Red hair. Generally, there are no known val populations within the Yhing Hir tribes. But in theory, assuming a sufficiently large body of vals that the lines just don't die out, I expect local influences would creep in with Asian/Mongol features. The Erdukeen are very isolated so I don't think we'd see this there with them. But perhaps we might see signs of this in the val'Haupt....?
