All,

I'm curious to hear from people involved in home games about how arcane spellcasters are handled, both from a player perspective as well as a GM perspective. Is there a lot more casting with subtlety? Did people actively avoid arcane casters building for a home game? What differences in flavor and feel do you see, and are there other rule type things you think need to be added or adjusted based on those experiences?

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

My home campaign has only divine and psionics casters. A reason for that is that 90% of my players have used pre-gen PCs, none of which are elder or eldritch. I've mentioned the Harvesters and the Sanctorum of the Arcane, but players have remained mostly ignorant. However, our next adventure is "So Shall Ye Reap", which will at least alert the players and PCs more, even though we still don't have any arcane casters (which don't count for the purposes of Paul's subtle-casting question).

As far as rules, I would like to see an explicit description of exactly who do Harvesters pursue:
  • we know they do go after Elder and Eldritch casters
  • we know they do not pursue Divine casters
  • confirm whether they go after Psionics casters (I'm pretty sure the answer is no)
  • confirm whether they go after Primal casters (I suspect the answer is no)
  • confirm whether they go after Sorcerer-Priest casters (I suspect the answer is no)
  • confirm whether they go after val'Mehans with natural spellcasting from bloodline abilities (I suspect the answer is no)
  • confirm whether they go after vals with bloodline abilities that mimic spells (I'm pretty sure the answer is no)

From my understanding:

Eldritch Casters - Very Yes

Elder Casters - Very Yes

Primal Casters - Yes, but not as much (they still are doing some fun things with magic and are more of a curiosity)

Psionic Casters - Yes, but more rarely (in the modern game, Psionics IS magic and not something else, but all known casters are Vals which is more dangerous)

Sorcerer-Priests of Sarish - Yes, but more rarely due to the nature of the faith likely involved (they'd focus on Arcane Archetype ones I would think than Divine)

Vals - Probably not any longer, unless they have magical talents. New families like the val'Sosi or rare families like the val'Cessari or val'Vasik are more likely for experimentation.

I would have switched the primal and psionic, but that's only because there is now known to be a psionic finger on Ymandragor, so I assume the do have significant interest in psions. We have yet to see any indication of actual interest in Primal casters, and considering the idea that primal casters get their power from another being, that makes sense. Now, I could see ymandrakes being interested in capturing the kinds of spirits that primal casters make deals with, to study them.... but since Primal casters apparently have no power in their own right, it makes sense for the ymandrakes to take little interest in them.
