 Post subject: HP 2-5 Vexing Priests

So we were playing Vexing Priests Saturday and discovered what felt like a fairly large plot hole. Our party identified very easily that the third stolen item was linked to the Prophet (curly brown hair in both descriptions, each stolen item linked to a person of religious significance in the town). When we went to pick up the torch from him, we knew he was the third target - we brought him with us to defend Leola.

The mod seems to clearly assume the players won't make the connection between the ring and the prophet, which seems crazy since the connection was obvious to us. What gives? Not sure what the suggestion here is except to write in the scenario that players will defend the prophet and/or bring him with them to defend their choice of primary target (and of course, face 2x the big bad).

When I played this module, we did the same thing. The GM fixed it by having the prophet refuse to go with us to save Leola... he claimed that his religion valued martyrdom, and that he refused to go on the basis that the party would have more difficulty saving anyone if they had to fight two of the creatures rather than one. We couldn't get him to go with us short of kidnapping him - something that wouldn't work well since we'd have the whole Pearl after us if we did that.

I'll double check what is written in the mod but I believe the priest of Aii refuses to go with you. He is aware that he is a target but he wants the Heroes to save one of the other religious leaders instead of him. He is not a fighter at all and will only impede the fight with the Breath of Natus. However, we could add some more text to clarify his motivations and change the tactics of the fight to have him get taken out.

Quoting directly from the Development section of Scene 7: If the Heroes deduce that the Prophet is also a target, he will smile and tell them to save one of the others. It is an honor dying in the service of Aii and if that is the fate he has written for him, then so be it.

So the Prophet of Aii refuses to go with the Heroes. If they want to knock him out and drag him along, they can. But I would have the GM double the number of foes at the final encounter.
