Just to double-check, does Hedge Mage actually grant access to ASC or not? It does not appear to (which, to me, makes it a mechanically useless background (possibly good for flavor)).

It does not, but it does provide talents and skills that you need to take Apprentice Arcanist (pa).

Can you take Anointed Weapon if you worship Anshar, Jeggal Sag, or other deity with "unarmed" as weapon of choice? Mechanically it wouldn't really do much (since you already have a hand free) but it could be interesting flavor.

Can you take Hierloom (ta) with Unarmed? If not, then no.

Well it is something you inherited from your parents.

If you take Gift of the Pillar multiple times, do you gain AR:5 vs Fire each time? It's a little unclear since the Fire AR stacks but the special says you gain the benefits of a specific pillar (with no mention of Fire AR).

Why does the Manica have a SM of 2? That seems high for a small worn shield.

What are the weapon stats for the Manica? The description says it is designed as both armor and weapon but I don't see any weapon stats given.

Still reading through the rules so I'll probably have more questions...

Under the "Special" section, it states you may take it multiple times to get the effects of a new pillar. The AR5 is only for the first time you take the Talent.

Have you ever tried to swim (or climb, etc) with a big weight strapped to your arm? It is awkward, and that is why it takes a SM of 2.

As for weapon, it doesn't have any besides it's weapon trick. Aside from being a chunk of metal on your arm that let's you have a shield while keeping your hands free it isn'lol doesn't had much in terms of weapon status vs normal unarmed.

The main purpose of a manica is to have a shield while still having two free hands.

If you haven't taken a look at what a Manica looks like, it's worth doing. It's basically articulated overlapping plates of leather or steel starting at the shoulder and running all the way to the hand. There's often a shoulder plate as well. Because it impacts the movement of the entire arm, not just the forearm it makes sense it's penalty is larger than a light shield. The tradeoff is that you have a free hand.

With a sweep of his hat,

If the Manica is not actually a weapon then the Description needs errata:
Quote:
This armguard was designed for use among Coryani gladiators and used as a combination of weapon and armor.

As for the Manica penalties, it seems like it should be mixed (based upon the images and descriptions I can find). It should affect some skills (climbing et al) much less than any held shield but might affect other skills (swimming?) more (hard for me to say if a heavy weight all along your arm would affect swimming more or less than having a hand occupied). However, given that Arcanis only has the single SM to cover all skills, I still think it should be at worst a -1 (but I don't really expect this to change).

Attendant to the Soldier Saints of Dagha have Knight's Code as both a prereq (or, alternatively, Strength of the Coryani Heart) and give it as one of the talents granted but it is not a tiered talent. Was this intentional that "half" of the people taking it will only gain 1 talent when taking the path? Given the prereqs, it would seem more reasonable to grant the "other" talent that you don't already have (eg prereq as-is and talent granted of "Dedicated Defender and either Knight's Code or Strength of the Coryani Heart").

Runic Warrior looks interesting but isn't currently playable (for the campaign anyway). Tultipetan Dwarves are restricted to those that already bought a cert from the Kickstarter and Khitani is not an allowable nation (yet anyway). :(

Soldier Saints:

You need ONE of Knight's Code OR Strength of the Coryani Heart.

You gain Knight's Code as part of the Talents.

The Special says if you already have Knight's Code, you gain Strength of the Coryani Heart.

This means EVERYONE gets both talents.

I completely missed the first "special" where it says that so it does do what I was proposing already (nothing to see here - move along).
