I had heard at Origins that the Sama were going to become a playable race with the release of this book. Was that just a baseless rumour to begin with, or was there a change by PCI before the release?

I had heard rumor that there might be more information about the Il'Huan in the book, and that they may become playable races. I never understood that, and figured it had a low probability of becoming reality. Was there any thought on that?

Any possibility of the Ssethregore book bringing in some new player races?

You're pulling my leg, right?

No, I don't believe so.

Nope, someone did actually pass me that rumor with a straight face, and I was still really new then so I didn't realize how crazy it was. Sadly, I was also new enough that I don't remember who it was who told me that tall tale. I never really did buy it, but I thought it was an interesting concept. Like I said, I always assumed low probability. :)

Il'Huan. That's a good one.

Though I confess I kinda want to run a mini-campaign where the PCs are Voiceless Ones and have to "cause" the mad Emperor Quron val'Dellenov to launch the Second Coryani-Khitani war...

I really love the flavor of the Death Mongers. I'm a bit unsure of how to build one though. The spells and paths seem to treat the Divine Trinity as a single Deity, but there's no entry that matches the original ARPG table 2-2 to describe that deity's armor, skill, and weapon.

Reading the "Initiate" background, I'd guess at:

Deity: Divine Trinity / Death Monger
Pantheon: Pantheon of Man
Sect: Divine Trinity / Death Monger
Skill: Etiquette?? Heal??
Weapon: Spear
Armor: Chainmail

Only the skill seems indeterminate.

It's interesting to me that the background does not grant access to Divine Spell Casting the way that Initiate of the Gods(ba) does. Would a non-Divine build need to back into spell casting via Initiate Itinerant(pa), Templar Itinerant(pa), or the like?

Alternatively, do I build a Nerothan/Beltinian/Sarishan, and then make them an initiate?

Does a Death Monger immediately associate with a Father/Mother/Childe role from creation, or is that distinction something that they get later?

Finally, can you play a DM on its own, or do you have to get two friends to join you (since they always travel in groups of three or more, per their path)?

Thanks!

Thanks!

You're correct. For skill, pick one of the three.

So a standard starting build would be:
Archetype: Divine
Deity: Divine Trinity
Background: Initiate to the Divine Trinity / Death Monger

If you look at the Spells section, you'll note that there is an entry for Deity spells specific to the Divine Trinity. This list replaces the list you would get if you selected an individual god.

You're fine making one and adventuring on your own. If you can convince a couple of friends to join you, it would be cool to see, but not required.

Choose one of the three (but only one) of Heal, Etiquette, or Knowledge (Religion). As stated in the book, acolytes of the Divine Trinity start off in the role of one of The Father, the Mother, or The Childe, and their skill choice should reflect that choice.

If you want access to the spells that are specifically combinations of spells from 2 of the 3 gods, your Death Monger would need to be a part of the Orthodoxy and take the Path Keepers of Forgotten Lore (Codex of Heroes) which grants access to those spells.

Followers of the Divine Trinity do NOT need to follow the Orthodoxy Path to gain multiple Gods. It is a fundemental aspect of their religion that they AUTOMATICALLY gain spells from all three, as per the list provided in the book. In fact, there are some Pantheon Spells which appear on their "Deity" Spell List.

As such, Death Mongers ONLY get access to Common Deity Spells as well as the Deity Spells as found in their specific spell list. The Trinity is treated as a single god in terms of their spell selection.

So I'll ask the dumb question. Which armor(s) are considered chainmail? I'd think chain hauberk, Mil. chain hauberk, Kio hauberk, and maybe chain shirt. Mil chain hauberk is the only one that actually uses the word chainmail, but the others are all described in a way that would make them chainmail. It seems like it should be common sense to me, but I've been wrong on how I understood a rule vs how it was officially ruled before.

Chain Shirt, Chain Hauberk, Plate and Chain. Kio Hauberks are very selective type of armor only made by the Kio.
