I asked that earlier in this thread and, despite the description, was told that the Manica has absolutely no usage as a weapon beyond having a Tier 1 weapon trick.

On doing some reading, I found references to most gladiators using the Manica wearing it on their sword arm and using a shield (small for Thraex/Hoplomachus, large oblong for Murmillo/Secutor, etc). In fact, in a discussion of typical Roman gladiators, it appears that only the Retarius did not use a shield (and his Manica was larger covering part of the chest in addition to the arm). What are the rules for this in Arcanis? As near as I can see, there is no benefit for using a Manica and another shield under the rules (which seems very odd given that it was historically common).

I like the concept of the Manica but, as written, there are some significant issues with mechanics not matching description (and not matching reality).

Also as an oddity about the Citadels, if you weren't raised in the First City, your only language options are pidgin, hunai, and maghir, correct? And you aren't literate. Say, even if you were raised in the Citadel of Althares, which I assume (though it is not stated) is run by Coryani?

I'm not so worried about historical accuracy, but to have it described as having been designed to be
Quote:
used as a combination of weapon and armor

than have it do no damage compared to shields designed to just be shield, or even other metal gloves (the gauntlet) seems odd.

What exactly does the "special" note on Grab & Stab mean? Does it mean that Grab & Stab can be combined with any other Base maneuver (as normal) and that Disarm Foe is considered Base for purposes of combining with Grab & Stab?

edited because I just realized that Disarm Foe is Advanced...

I just noticed that Grab & Stab is a Push while Disarm Foe is a normal maneuver. If you have both, does Disarm Foe effect the speed of Grab & Stab at all or does it stay as a Push (Weapon Speed) with Recovery 4?

Looking at the Sweep and Strike martial technique, I believe double spear doesn't count for Trip Foe?

Also looking at that technique, shouldn't it require Trip Foe technique instead of or in addition to Two Weapon Fighting? The way it reads, the pole arm has to be a valid weapon for Trip Foe, but you don't need to learn Trip Foe.

Gnomes can choose to be from human nations or dwarven enclaves. Is it legal to choose Tultipet enclave as a Gnome? If so, that is one legal option for accessing Runic Warrior (non-trivial needing to be gnome from Tultipet with DSC (or ASC) plus the other prereqs).

Given that both Spear and Quarterstaff qualify for Trip Foe, Double Spear should qualify (I assume the list just wasn't updated with Codex of Heroes weapons). Rereading it, Double Spear does qualify - Trip Foe simply lists "Spear" which encompasses light spear, long spear, and double spear.

I don't think so. Trip Foe seems to only being used for the base list of weapons. For clarity, it probably would have been good if they simply relisted the valid ones.

And a story/mechanics question that probably only Henry can answer...

Why is Soldier-Saints of Dagha restricted to Almeric, Coryan, and Milandir? Why not any follower of either Mother Church or Milandric Church?

I was thinking of having my Kio (from League of Princes) become a Soldier-Saint before I noticed the nationality restrictions. It's not a huge loss though as I have my tier 1 and 2 paths already assigned.

You are correct. Runic Tattoo should read at the end:

Special: Once you acquire this Talent, it is no longer a Limited Talent for you.

While you're there, can you comment on the requirements block for that Runic Tattoo talent? It's a [Limited] talent, so as I read it, only Runic Warriors can get it directly. Does the inclusion of the block (and the lack of reference to the path in the block) mean that you can get around the Path limitation?
