So, I bought a backpack with 10 flasks of oil and dropped in a key 5 foot area. Later that same round an enemue npc cast lighting bolt affecting the area with the unattended sack of oil. Poof the mob in the same square asvthe backpack take the lightning bolt damage plus 50hp of fire damage from the now lit oil sack.

But the more i think about it 50 hp from an item interaction seams way off base. Is there better way to adjudicate a oil bomb olike this?

Thanks,

Hi Eric

If you can have 10 flaks, then why not 100, or more. I don’t think the oil flasks work this way. Meaning I don’t think they would stack. A flask or 10 flasks in one square will deal 5 fire damage.

You might home rule that it burns for longer with many flasks of oil. I think the 5E rules are hinting at the limits by saying that a creature can take this damage only once per turn.

Also I’m not sure that lightning bolt would do the job to ignite it. The target has to take fire damage as I read it.

Anyway, all of this is just my opinion, but this is how I would adjudicate it.

Yea, the 5hp flat seams more in tune with the action economy. Ok that answers the staking question.

Thanks!

I’m a big believer that when a player acts outside the box they get ::something:: even if it isn’t exactly what the player tried for. I generally look for guides or parallels to match the resources expended with other effects. Also thinking about whether or not Fate is being expended.

One idea: increased area. 10 flasks in a bag would individually fill ten 5’ squares. All in one bag they might fill a 15” square (step back and watch your eyebrows!)

Idea 2: extended burn: because the oil is contained in a bag maybe it burns longer and lasts 2-3 rounds in 1 square.

10d6 fire damage though is badly out of line with a very modest PC investment. If that worked reliably then every army on Arcanis would be sending troops with oil. I would generally be skeptical of granting extra damage.

As for lightning...it’s not unreasonable for an unattended flammable object to combust when hit by a lightning bolt IMO.

Just my thoughts.

Per the lightning bolt spell: "The lightning ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried."

Ah, but the bag is carried. (Attack roll and/or saving throw may apply).

Exposed blastpowder on the other hand...

Ruling on this should be a case by case basis by the GM

keep in mind, such items should be... unpredictable at best.
