Question, some runes require attunement. If you put one of those runes on a magic item that already requires attunement, how does that effect your total allowed attuned items?

Example if I put a spell rune on my amulet of the faithful does the combo count as one attuned item or two attuned items?

Never Mind. Just saw you can't put a rune on a magic item in 5e. Problem answered itself.

Although magic items generally can't have runes, this does pose a good question for a Kio Sword, which requires attunement and with the magical family heirloom rule can gain an uncommon rune at 7th level. If one chooses a rune which requires attunement(such as a spell rune), would the sword and its runes still only be one attunement slot?

That’s a great question.

I am no one official but I lean conservative in my interpretations of the rules. So I would guess that they each require attunement. That said I can see the alternative argument that it’s one item at the end of the day...

I hunted this down awhile back:
Forged In Magic: Reforged p178, Rune Quality and Slots wrote:

So, your fancy heirloom kio sword costs you one slot, not one per rune. Likewise, it seems likely that Eric's original question about the oddball magic items that accept runes (ex. Ring of Earth's Mettle) should fall under the same rule: one item, one attunement slot, unless item text overrides.

Nobody official here.
