So I'm looking to do the Steel Whip and Gladius combo outlined for ARG in Codex of Hero's as a custom fighting style in 5e. But there is not a 1-1 conversion to rely on. What are the good techniques and maneuvers for a stylistic fit? If it matters I'm pairing the fighting style with a Battle Mage Eldritch Arch type. |

Right now I am thinking: Pressing Attack for my maneuver Balanced Hands & Deadly Strike for the techniques. While I know this meets RAW, are there any glaring unwritten thematic issues folks see? |

Question: Do spells have somatic components that would require a free hand in the 5e rules (I believe they do)? If so, having two hands worth of weapon would then mean that you could not cast spells, correct? |

Yes. A free hand is normally required. There are ways around that. The first one being Spell and Steel feat. That turns a weapon into a spell focus. This is the only way for Divine and Primal casters to cast spells with somatic components. Sorcerers however have the option to apply the subtle spell metamagic to do away with the somatic and verbal components. That cramps my style a bit on the casting side of things. But it is a trade I am willing to make. Also, just because I have two weapons does not mean I always have to draw two weapons. |

Spell selection can also help. There are a few good spells out there that are verbal only. I prefer riposte to pressing attack (more attacks!). But your mileage will vary with your AC. If your AC is 13 from Mage Armor and no Dex then it’s a terrible choice! But if you are fighting with two weapons I’m assuming you have taken reasonable steps not to die in melee and have a decent AC. |

Yep. Ac 17 from half plate and +2 dex and 64 hp at lvl 6. Gnome, battlemage, and 17 con to get there hit point wise. I was unsure about my manuver so I went with the one that seamed most whiplike. Also I enjoy pushing folks around th e battlemat. I did not think to look for verbal only spells. But that might be a good idea. |

With too much time on my hands tonight I went and found the verbal only spells ... Aura of (Life, Radiance) - 5ECS Blindeness/Deafness Blur Command Compelling Strike - 5ECS Contact Other Plane Circle of Radiance - 5ECS Decree of Salvation - 5ECS Deeper Understanding - 5ECS Dimension Door Dissonent Whispers Divine Word Evil Eye - 5ECS Faerie Fire Geas Glibness Guardian of Faith (mass) Healing Word Irresistible Dance Knock Mind Fog - 5ECS Power Word (Kill, Stun) Prayer of Healing Primal Senses - 5ECS Retribution - 5ECS Righteous Edict - 5ECS Righteous Fury - 5ECS Shadow Step - 5ECS Smite Herretic - 5ECS Spirit Flames - 5ESC Teleport Thaumaturgy Time Stop Wish Word of Recall Good luck casting Wish in the campaign anytime soon! On the other hand, Command & Blindness + Blur & Knock all come pretty early and are worth knowing. (I should maybe add that a long time ago in 2E I played in a long running Dark Sun campaign where "Wizards" were public enemies and our PCs were often stopped by "civic authorities" and searched for spell components ("Bat guano? Who the *^#! carries around bat crap?!? Except a wizard looking to defile the land with his fireballs!"). I VERY quickly learned to cherry pick my spells to avoid needing anything suspicious. And out of that old habit I still look at the VSM components of spells.) |
