Hey, I just noticed a potential oversight in the primer. The warlock rules let Pact of the Chain summon a beast with a 1/4 CR as a familiar. Giant Owls and Giant Bats meet that rule and are capable of serving as mounts. I can not imagine this was intended given how closely restricted flight is in ARG. Is this something that merits an Erratta? Or will this be taken care of in the core book?

Thanks

*Sees low HP creature being used as a mount*

"PULL!"

*Creature dies horribly to a single crossbow bolt and hero falls to their death*

Sure, but this isn't just a combat concern - this is potentially mod breaking. I'm with Eric - the text should specify non-flying or some size limitation.

flight is available from tier 2 in the ARG and it hasn't unbalanced much, since it is the same kind of flight -generally worthless in combat. (Path of the raptor) Considering that with the multiclassing rules and warlocks being classified as primal there doesn't appear to be a route for them to get feather fall, so flying that way really is risking your character.

Though with the laser range finder of "eldritch spear" giving them 300 foot range, I can see why they might be willing to risk it as they can effectively stay out of range of almost anything out doors (except another warlock :), or pretty far range for a rifle)

Two thoughts on this...

First a Warlock an uncommon spell rune CAN gain access to Feather Fall. It is only 1000 gp. Not cheap, but certainly affordable for the dedicated caster.

Second, Eldritch Spear, when combined with Spell Sniper will push the effective range of Eldritch Blast to 600 ft. Keep in mind with that combo there is zero cover or range penalty. So, until the Primer is officially dropped, then flying owl strafing runs can be performed safe from even rifles if you dedicate your resources to that one trick.

Personally, I'd side with the skeet-shooting camp IF we were only writing mods for 5e. After all, Wizards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks gain access to Fly at lvl 5, and Wizards and Sorcerers gain access to Levitate at lvl 3. So in that case flying should be taken into consideration for mod writing. But most of the ARG mods don't consider flying an option, so there may be an added level of conversion issues to consider. Not game breaking, in regular mods. But in a BI....

That said, I am perfectly willing to take the risk of a flying mount IF that was intended to be an option. Especially since I can cast Find Familiar as a ritual when needed to swap in and swap out a mount. I just want to be sure that the campaign staff have had a chance to voice their concerns and plan accordingly.

Don't forget Warlocks can gain levitate at will at lvl 2 if they so choose.

Its the responsibility of mod authors to try and take into account all the crazy things characters can do. If you can manage a way to fly at level 3, mod writers have to figure out what to do about that.
