Considering even a fighter can only pick up ~8 feats in 20 levels (forgoing all stat bumps to do so), 40 feats is spreading a bit thin under this ruleset.

Actually, based on the variety of builds that could be made. I think 40 is a good start.

Not everyone will get every feat, but you don't want someone to not have any good choices.

I think you may have missed the 'I have not even started into combat schools yet'

Take a look at one of the pre-gens for an idea on what a fighting school will look like

Each one is equal to two feats... so far I have 6 fighting schools planned out...

And this is something that should raise some eyebrows.... a system that allows players to create their own combat school... a personal style of you will.

Based on what I'm seeing so far, it looks like:
1. Take the "Fighting School" Feat (in place of a stat advancement, as usual).
2. Choose 2-4 restrictions from a list to define your style.
3. Choose 2-3 options from a list for the tier (Initiate, Journeyman, Master).
4. Defeat your opponents to obtain bragging rights, "My school is the best! The rest are but poor imitators who cannot compete with me."

I think we need to shift this to a new thread (goes and makes one):
