The primer says that val'Mehan always summon fiendish familiar when using the Find Familiar spell. I originally took that to mean an imp or a quasit, but have recently realized that could just mean a fiendish subtype of a normal animal. Which is it? Is there a way to get an imp or a quasit familiar in the 5e campaign since the fiend is not a valid option for a patron for a warlock? I'm hoping so, because having an invisible minion is so much fun to play for a character....

From the Find Familiar spell:
Quote:
You gain the service of a familiar, a spirit that takes an animal form you choose: bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, Lizard, Octopus, owl, Poisonous Snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, Sea Horse, Spider, or Weasel. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the familiar has the Statistics of the chosen form, though it is a celestial, fey, or fiend (your choice) instead of a beast.

Sorry, it just means that the type is fiend instead of beast. It does not open new options. At least not until we get the full book.

You can get an imp or a quasit, but you have to be a Warlock with Path of The Chain.

I find it odd to have a bloodline power that only removes choice. I admit it generally makes sense that val'Mehan would have fiendish familiars, but its not much of a power to have your choice reduced from celestial, fey, or fiend to only being allowed fiendish.

Question (don't have book on me): Does the bloodline power only work if you have the Find Familiar spell, or does it GIVE you the spell as part of the bloodline even if you would not normally get it? If it is the latter, in no way does it remove choice as people who would never get it (like a Paladin, for example) may get the benefits from it.

Actually if you check Primer (pg 38) you cannot get an Imp or Quasit (or Pseudodragon or Sprite) familiar as a warlock in LA. You are limited to a beast with a CR up to 1/4.

Thus, part of my question.

Its a part of a blood line ability that grants the val'Mehan several ritual wizard spells - one of which can be find familiar - to it could apply to any val'Mehan if that is one of the rituals they chose as part of that power.

Also, I can't find any definition of what it means to have a fiendish familiar. Fiendish doesn't appear to be a template that I can find anywhere. Am I missing it? How is a fiendish ferret different than a normal one?

The Find Familiar spell means you summon a magical shapeshifting creature which takes the form of a specific creature (though it is NOT that creature). In 5e, it is listed as a "spirit," though the nature of this spirit can be celestial, fey, or fiend. This creature cannot attack, but can perform some actions related to its form. It's type grants it no special bonuses, though it does affect what can affect IT (for example, Sarishan steel would damage a Fiend Familar more than a Fey one).

As Cody said, the find familiar spell in 5e isn't really the same thing as having a familiar in other editions. It just lets you summon a spirit that takes the form of one of the listed beasts. The spell allows you summon a celestial, fey or fiendish spirit, as you choose. The val'Mehan ability simply restricts that choice to just fiendish (or infernal as we call them in Arcanis).

In very broad terms, it is a restriction; but it is part of a bloodline power letting you learn wizard rituals. It's a trade-off and not very onerous restriction at that. Unlike past editions of D&D, there is no celestial or fiendish template you can apply to a creature. The spell simply changes the creature's type from beast to infernal. That's it.

Thanks for explaining that. Will there be a means to get an imp or quasit familiar?
