Should Rudimentary Prayers be Limited if the character already has access to take Divine Spell Casting? Currently a Templar with a 5 Charisma can cast no spells, but a 2 Charisma Sword Saint can take Rudimentary Prayers. Adding a note to the effect of:

Special: If you have access to Divine Spell Casting, this Talent is no longer Limited for you.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

"meeting the requirements for divine spell casting" includes the minimum 6 stat requirement along with Prestidigitation and a rank in the skill. Rudimentary Prayers doesn't require any of that. You'd still prevent the Ch 5 Templar from taking this talent. If they've got all the requirements I don't see very much reason they would take Rudimentary Prayers although I guess you'd gain a skill rank in addition to the spell.

What about:

Special: If you have access to Divine Spell Casting, this Talent is no longer Limited for you. If you already have the Divine Spell Casting Talent, you may not take Rudimentary Spell Casting.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

Keep in mind there's an equivalent Arcane Spell Casting and Rudimentary Spell Casting that would need updated the same, whatever the decision.

I thought of that except I couldn't think of any instances where you have access to ASC but not either have it already granted or be given Arcane Spell Casting. I just realized that the Shaman background does exactly that.

I would agree that the wording for the two should be the same.

Remember you can't "take" Rudimentary spell casting... it's a [Limited] talent and granted though a path/background.

Opening up this line of talents is rather powerful imo. Having to take a Path to get such a good talent is a good limitation. I personally think its best the way it is.

Learning to cast spells takes a level of dedication... spells are a powerful resource for players, should cost you something

Personally, I was always of the thought that Rudimentary Prayers should have this text:

"If you already have Divine Spell Casting or Rudimentary Prayers, you learn Learn Spell (Ta) instead"
