Both Rudimentary prayers and Rudimentary Spell Casting give you the appropriate Arcanum as a trained skill. Spontaneously Awakened does not. It should.

Here is why:

In Spontaneously Awakened it says you can use the power even if you have no ranks in Arcanum. This is very problematic to me.

Example 1
Most powers have ways to boost them built in. Can I do that? It says I can cast the spell... is it only the base spell? If I have Refresh the Body will I be able to heal my own wounds?

Example 2
I'm in the lavender way and it is more difficult to cast psionic spells due to an environmental hazard or creature ability... increasing the CTN of psionic spells by 3. You can cast the spell but have no ability to make an arcanum check because you no training. Does it work anyway since you don't have to roll and the talent says you can cast it anyway?

There are other examples of issues that this can cause. If Spontaneously Awakened made Arcanum (Psionic) a trained skill like the others it skips a lot of these pesky little unintended problems. This has been brought up before but it does not seem to be addressed in the errata.

The only way to get the Spontaneously Awakened Talent is via the Undisciplined Psion Background or the Spontaneously Awakened Scion Path, both of which given Arcanum (Meditation) as a Trained Skill.

That is not exactly correct. You could get certed access to spontaneously awakened making it no longer limited. To my knowledge this has not been done yet, but it could be in the next module for all we know.

They could, but they haven't. If the talent were errataed to add a skill point, they would also have to errata both the path and background to remove that skill point, so that a person taking those don't receive two skill points. It is a lot of work for a hypothetical future scenario, and ultimately unnecessary.

There are ways this can happen.

This happens for me because every Hatchling of Ven Val'Sosi has this potential problem.

And every scion of Ven can take Arcanum (Meditation) if they wish. Actually, from the fluff that Henry gave us, having them NOT gain a rank in Arcanum is way MORE flavourful. After all, in the short story he wrote the Scions of Ven are born with Psionic potential which they cannot control (basically Psionically screaming in everyone's minds as a baby would cry), causing harm to those around them. If they defaulted to ranks in Arcanum, this would show more control than they necessarily would have normally (ranks = some level of formal training).

I know the val'Holryn's are teaching them, but not all of them will learn to truly control their powers, as not everyone can/will learn how to do math in our world (some people's minds just don't cooperate). Perfect system? No, but I considering that you can take 2 ranks of Arcanum (Meditation) at character creation when spending skill points I see absolutely no reason why this is in any way a detriment to your character, nor do I see it as unbalanced. After all: for Ven's crowd they automatically gain spell casting without having to spend a talent, so having to invest Skill points into it seems worth a free (and fairly powerful) talent to me.
