It looks as if the Martial archetype is missing an advancement option. There is no "Acquire a new Trained <specialty> Skill; you gain this skill at 2 Ranks per Hero Tier."

Arcane has this for Lore. Divine has this for Social. I would expect that it would have been included as either Combat or "Combat or Physical" as the others match their special skill advancement.

Perhaps this is design vs. oversight, but given the number of different combat skills at a minimum, there's certainly room for it.

Paul

All archetypes have 4 Advancement Options, so I'm guessing (going out on a limb) that it was intentional. Martial characters are not 'skill characters', even combat or physical.

Even though they need at least 2 different combat skills to cover melee and ranged while a caster needs one? That doesn't cover mettle or battle or any of the other skills. The goal of the system is flexibility, so I'm not sure why it would make sense to box them in. They have more skills that a divine archetype for example.

I can see the argument about equal number of additional options though not sure if that's critical. It's also why I asked if it was intentional or not.

Seems odd to me. But getting 2 ranks per level in an actual melee or ranged skill is not all that useful. It's not "combat grade." Mettle and Battle would be useful, but this assumes you didn't pick one or both up at start.

As with any of these choices if you pick it up at the beginning of the tier you can catch up quite a bit. A skill picked up at tier 3 starts with 6 ranks and then adding 3 more ranks means you're at 9 possibly 10 or 11 depending on Sabbatical and a Path. You do fall 1 rank behind per tier but it could still be useful or a physical skill could be.

I would expect if the argument is that it's suboptimal then it would be easier to include. I'm not sure it wouldn't be taken as frequently as the bonus stamina.

Okay. Not sure how often it'll come up but you've persuaded me.

It is the number of advancements for the Archetype that limited it. The Hero has Combat skills advanced by the Archetype, but not the ability to gain more. We figured the ability to take 4 Martial Maneuvers was cooler.

I definitely agree.
