Just a thought to toss out there. Lo number of background skills, excluding melee & ranged as they were the 2 biggest trouble makers with the talent that shall not be named. ;)

I've finally twigged to what the underlying game design flaw is regarding Training Talents (specifically Continued Training, but it rears itself in a few other places).

Arcane and Divine have two separate skill advancement options.

Arcane Archetype wrote:
* Gain 1 Rank in a single Arcanum skill, Deceit and Stealth.
* Gain 1 Rank to a number of Trained Lore Skills equal to 3+ your Logic Passive Value.

Divine Archetype wrote:
* Gain 1 Rank in a single Arcanum skill, your Deity's favored skill, and Knowledge (Religion).
* Gain 1 Rank to a number of Trained Social Skills equal to 3+ your Logic Passive Value.

Combining the two options into one in the next edition would fix so many ongoing problems.

Example:
Arcane wrote:
* Gain 1 Rank in a single Arcanum skill, Deceit and Stealth and to a number of Trained Lore skills equal to your Logic Passive Value.

Divine wrote:
* Gain 1 Rank in a single Arcanum skill, your Deity's favored skill, and Knowledge (Religion) and to a number of Trained Social skills equal to your Logic Passive Value.

I am *NOT* looking for another edition. Otherwise +1 to what Southernskies says.

I like it too. I had suggested something similar to this, but a bit more broadly worded. The character would receive 3+ Passive Logic to be chosen from the [3 Archetype skills] + Lore/Social skills. Either solution works to fix the problem, with one being a bit more flexible.

I slightly prefer Johns way as it is more flexible. As John has pointed out, this is not the first time this suggestion was made. However, I would remove the word trained from the language, in southernkisses version, so that you can pick up new social skills or knowledge skills. While there may not be a lot of social skills there are a lot of knowledge skills.

This change would be better than the others to make these archeteypes closer to the efficiency of the expert.

I strongly oppose the idea of letting them take new skills with this advance. There are already other ways to add skills. Part of the reason that the advancement is currently limited to the Arcanum + 2 skills is how powerful/useful the Arcanum skill is. I am willing to agree to bring the Arcane and Divine skill options in line with the Martial and Experts one. I'm not in favor of making them the best skill advancement option though.

Paul

I strongly urge keeping trained. These advancements across archetypes are for advancing trained skills only. There are other ways to get new skills.

I honestly don't think the power of the arcanum skill has anything to do with it, or at least shouldn't. Casters have the arcanum skill to raise just like martial raise their combat skills and experts raise whatever they want. It's the key to their abilities.

For casters in combat both their melee and their ranged attacks all run off the same skill. For any physical combatant doing both ranged and melee is already a minimum of 2 skills. It is a stronger single skill.

But no more important to them than combat skills are to martial.
