Q: Is the martial archetype the only one that doesn’t need to spend a talent to learn to use a shield?
A: Correct

according to the entire FAQ, this answer is wrong, an expert can take it as a weapon and then be granted the armor prof with it also

But for an Expert to take it as a weapon, they must spend a talent. A Martial gains proficiency with ALL Armours AND Weapons of their nations, while NO other Archetype does.

A: Yes, and in the case of national you must choose an appropriate shield of course.

If an Expert wants to spend a Weapon Talent on a single Shield, that seems fine to me. They don't get the 'universal' shields that Martials get.

Martial don't really get 'universal' either unless they are from Coryan (from memory, only Coryan gets tower shields).

It was stated elsewhere on the forums I believe saying that Martials get Armour Proficiency (Shields), and not just Armour Proficiency (Whatever shields are on their national table).

Nope. Exactly the opposite. I asked and Pedro said that Martial only get Armor Proficiency (whatever shields are on the national table). I had to rebuild one character due to that clarification.

That answer doesn't match the one where you can pick a shield as a weapon proficiency from a national weapons list. Or did that get removed?
