I would say you are right. There is a holy day called Martyrday where everyone wears coarse burlap soaked in lye to burn their skin. Then after fasting for the rest of the day they go out in the evening as a riotous mob to "celebrate." Those who wish to remain safe hide in their homes behind locked doors.

Everyone suffers and no one wins.
