Yes yes! That was exactly what I was thinking. Those poor stones were lacking in mafic qualities ... 
Tukufu doesn't write much directly these days but I prevailed upon him to jot down his memories of the DZV "mission" from the safety of his local Starbucks. (FYI he says one opened on the border of the Pense Mar. I don't believe everything he writes me, but they are everywhere...) Plied with a gift card and a tall Mocha he eventually sent back this:

Still, I can definitely say I saw quartz looking stuff. But no obsidian. Generally you need volcanoes for that...as I understand it. Anyway I didn't notice any volcanoes. Even with the various "distractions" we encountered I think i would have if they were any there. Why no volcanoes you ask? My working hypothesis is that they were simply outcompeted by the other (horrific) features of that land... .
