Like many have said, I work from a character concept. What I envision the character becoming. Working from that concept I build up the framework.

Then I let the modules shape and mold the character further. Sometimes things will happen in the module that have a direct impact on the character.

However, I do, generally, lean towards heroic characters.

Usually, I start with a concept like everyone here. I do a little research on the lore so my backstory would sound consistent. Then I pick the class that comes the closest to the concept. My first two sessions are where the character is tested and fine tuned to my liking and that of my fellow players. Asking myself things like did his motivates seem believable? Was he more confrontational with certain characters or in general? Did the flaws hinder or help the experience? By the third play through, I have a working character that I like to play and would bring a fun style to the table.

Fortunately, I had some help designing my first Arcanis toon during a con organized play. At the time I wasn't too familiar with the lore and how different it was from D&D.
