I'd LOVE to go the Anointed Weapon route as it would be massively helpful to me. Alas, my Heirloom was my armor, not my sword, and I have invested a lot of time and money into my present Fervidite blade to replace it with a Foundation Talent. The sacrifices needed to make it work simply outweigh the benefits it would have to Haakon's casting.

No rebuilds for either of my characters out of the book. I'm actually surprised, since I assumed there would be something in there, especially with the little bit of text about the Andyar shaman types and their luck stones. I had also been wondering about whether there would be different types of Soldier-Saints (room for casters or skill monkeys in their ranks, essentially) but there they are straight up knights, which makes sense. The only other possibilities would have been if there was some professional treasure seeker type of path especially designed around the delving the first city, or something related to the eternal choir - again, not things I was really expecting.

Loved the book, but really, would expect more things of interest to my current characters from a book about the hinterlands, for example. Though for by tertiary character I could see going for a soldier saint now.... Though I suspect I'll never play enough to waurant having a tertiary character, it won't stop me from making him...

I'm confused. What makes them not have room for casters or skill monkeys?

Requirements:
1. Weapon Mastery (any one handed weapon) (ta)
2. one of Knight’s Code (ta) or Strength of the Coryani Heart (ta);
3. 6 ranks in Knowledge (Religion) and Mettle;
4. one of Sword Saint (pa), Equestrian (ba), or Squire (ba);
5. Must have either the Heroic or Code of Honor Flaw;
6. Must be an adherent of either the Mother Church of Coryan or the Milandric Orthodox Church, with no Infamy with either group.

Archetype: Any (and could have Weapon Mastery with any archetype + background)
Background: Equestrian
Flaw: Code of Honor
Church: Pick your preference of the 2

Your 1.5 advancement could be as an Adherent of the Soldier Saints. You could be an Expert, Divine, Arcane (Psionics, Eldritch or Sarishan Sorceror Priest) or Martial. In terms of casters, no Shamans or Elder (can't meet the religion requirements).

If you go Squire background you need to pick up a Knight Path before qualifying. Going the Sword Saint route opens even more doors.

The benefits are ranks in Arcanum or spell related talents other than The High Blades which is a pretty nice spell, but I certainly wouldn't consider them closed to casters and skill monkeys.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

In fluff the Attendants are the 'hangers on' of the Soldier Saints, but since they are basically the knightly entrourage they need to be able to fight. The Saints have a pretty rough job, so having a bunch of val'Mehan emissaries hanging around (however faithful they are) probably isn't helpful.

Also remember, only the Attendant to the Soldier Saints is currently available for play. Like Warrior of the Eternal Flame, you have to complete story events to qualify for the higher Paths (similar to what was done with the Warriors of the Eternal Flame in the previous campaign).

Nothing in the player based crunch affects Tukufu. Although all things considered I really should find a slot somewhere for him to take Treasure Hunter just based on fluff.

Would have been nice to have seen a path or background to represent a holy hermit.

For players I like the Hedge Mage. Nice to have a (eldritch) spell casting background that gives a rank of arcanum & doesn't have to be a member of the Sanctorum... I also like the new flaws. Blind seems to be prohibitive but the others are nice. Zealot .... <sigh> because why should it just be NPCs right? :P

I don't think phylactary should adjust the combat value of a creature. If it keeps coming back that's a function of "plot" not a function of how hard you have to hit it in an encounter.

My current 2 cents. Still digesting...

I don't have the pdf in front of me, but I believe it grants a rank of Knowledge (Arcanum), not a rank of Arcanum _______.

Good catch. You're right. And too bad, that makes it a lot less useful as a background in most cases...

Alas, there is only one item in this book that is of any interest to my main character, and that is the Sweep and Strike martial technique. But, I don't see the double spear as qualifying for Trip Foe as it should operate more like a quarterstaff with pointy ends than a spear. Although, it can be used with his halberd instead.

Looking back, there really isn't an update on applicable weapon tricks and martial techniques for weapons introduced in Codex of Heroes.

Anyone else reconsidering their character paths, or wishing to make new characters with the new book out?

I can't find time to play multiple characters, and there was no crunch in the book that I felt I needed for Kelb. I may use the opportunity for a rebuild to make a few changes but probably won't use anything in the new book.

While no rebuild for my characters. I want to make a Death Monger, a character for the Blood Guard Path, and a character to go for Warrior of the Eternal Flame. I'm super excited WotEF is back. That was the very first build that got me interested in Arcanis.

I'll make them but probably never play them. Maybe I'll give them out as pre-gens to new players at my table.
