AAAAND if you want it to provide a benefit, there is always the learning at the church that is reflected in "church educated" ... I'm not sure when secular learning educations came into being, but I'm pretty sure religious ones were around before that (and are still around in various forms)
but that is a digression from the orgiinal question

I can't speak for anyone else, but my interest is purely academic (forgive the pun). I think that the availability of higher education can tell you a lot about a society.

It certainly isn't like modern access, but anyone reasonably wealthy, or sponsored by somebody reasonably wealth could attend - as long as they have the ability to master the curriculum.

I suspect you'd find something in the major metropoli of the known lands. Naeranth and Tralia, grand Coryan and Enpyben (Savona, Panari etc), Censure and Nishanpur. A lot less sure about about second tier cities. Yarvek? Old Coryan? Maybe not. Basically one of the functions of early Universities is to provide "bureaucrats" for various court.
