When the Val Families were created, there were nearly 2-score in existance. Nowadays, we only have 13 Major Families, plus the val'Holryn. The Ul Families in the far west also exist, and we know most of them with the ul'Lo and the Tiger Men, of which we have less information about. However, seeing that we know all the other families, we can reasonably guess that the ul'Lo are the Nerothian Family, and that the Tiger Men are Saluwean. With these presumptions, we can actually fill the blanks and find out what Families went extinct during the Blood War:

val'Assante
Unknown
ul'Jaya

Sarishan:
val'Mehan
Unknown
ul'Tai

Saluwean:
val'Dellenov
val'Haupt
Tiger Men?

Nierite:
val'Emman
val'Virdan
ul'Tang

Beltinian:
val'Ishi
Unknown
ul'Nomai

Nerothians:
val'Mordane
Unknown
Possibly the ul'Lo?

Larissan:
val'Sheem
Unknown
ul'Shi

Yarricite:
val'Ossan
Unknown
ul'Rankin

Altheran:
val'Abedi
Unknown
ul'Wei

Cadican:
val'Borda
val'Trisin
ul'Hsin

Hurranite:
val'Tensen
Unknown
ul'Zheng

Ansharan:
val'Inares (Exclusive Ansharan Bloodline)

Unknown Origin Families:
val'Cessari
(note: val'Holryn are a possible Original Family, but since we know very little about their origins, we will leave them off the roster for now)

Possible Blood War Casualties:
Altheran Family, Unknown
Nerothian Family, Unknown
Larissan Family, Unknown
Yarricite Family, Unknown
Illirite Family, Unknown
Sarishan Family, Unknown
Beltinian Family, Unknown
Hurranite Family, Unknown

We have ~35 Original Families, which could be rounded to about 2-score, or 40. Running out of Space, continuing with Part 2.

Continuing from the first post, we have potentially 8 Extinct Families. This also lines up with Codex Geographa Vol. 1: The Blessed Lands, page 100 "After the bitter internecine war when the vals fought among themselves and entire bloodlines were wiped out, it is recorded that a full fifth of the First City was burned to the ground and that the original manses were, for the most part, destroyed. "

We know that each Original Family had an estate in the First City. With some simple math, we know that 2-score=40, and 40/5=8. Coincidentally, we have theorized that there are eight extinct bloodlines. Many of the estates are destroyed, but their properties were claimed by the survivors and now reside the Uncleansed Area. Perhaps an expedition will find the remains of one of these estates.

What we don't know are the names of the Families, but in the City lies a crypt in the southern escarpments where the dead were put to rest, where Imperators and entire Noble Families had personal chambers designed for them. So the fate of these dead families is quite literally under our noses (Under our feet, more specifically).

So, assuming my speculation is true:
1. There are Eight Extinct Families that died off in the Blood War.
2. Their ruined estates reside in the eastern side of the Uncleansed Area.
3. Their crypts lie undiscovered in some hidden chambers in the southern cliffs of the First City.

If anything is missing, please tell me.

That seems like a possible “guesstimate” but I wouldn’t get locked into exactly eight extinct families. 3x12 gods would equal 36 families. 4x12 would be 48 families. I so I think “2 score” probably has a +/- fudge factor.

If it was just as easy as digging to find those lost names then we would already have them. A sad truth of Arcanis is that for every group like the Emerald Society that seeks to recover the past, there is an opposite group that seeks tp bury the past. The Inquisition (Coryani and Black Talon) and the Legion of the Black Sun both actively “edit” the modern understanding of the past. So digging something up is only one step in the battle to bring new information to light. I think it’s safe to say that periodically such information comes to light and then is suppress.

Why do some groups do that. Sometimes out of punishment for crimes real & imagined ... and sometimes out of fear that if something lost “revives” it will pose a threat (usually to the current political elites).

The Bloodwar is a fascinating fulcrum on which Arcanis’ history has turned. Why is the val’ossan family split in two, with people of two different hair colors? I bet it’s from the Bloodwar with two families whose powers were merged.

I think you'd win that bet. ;-)

It's nice that things that were put in motion 19 years ago are finally coming to light, little by little. There's still so many other mysteries. I hope I can reveal them before I croak.

Thanks!

Henry

Well, quite the unexpected gift from Henry. It shall be put to good use in the future.

Shouldn't families that absorbed other families have twice the number of bloodline powers as families that didn't? I believe it was indicated that the ul's did not take part in the bloodwar, which was part of why they were "saved." Does that mean that they have half as many bloodline powers as a family that did take part of the bloodwar, like the val'Ossan? Since the val'Ossan and all the other known primary val families appear to have the same number of bloodline powers, does that mean that all the major val families have absorbed another line?

Maybe they do now. We have no idea the bloodline power distribution pre Blood War.

Way back in the days when Arcanis ran on 3rd edition D&D the major val families had Bloodlines that ran up to level 5 powers and the minor bloodlines tapped only went up to level 3 powers if I recall correctly. (Of course things were different then. In lots of ways ... elorii did not have bloodlines. And the val’Baucisz were rumored to be an offshoot of the val’Sungha....whose bloodline powers then look nothing like their powers now).

It might be tempting to assume that Minor families (that didn’t eat anyone) might still have a more limited selection of powers than those who gave in. But having seen the Bloodline powers for the val Cessari and the the val’Vasik I can say that’s not true. Neither family indulged in the Blood War to my knowledge and they both have the full set of powers that go up to 5.

This seems like may have a situation where the story and the rules mechanics are out of step.

In a home campaign my response would probably be to say that the extra powers weren’t stable over generations. And have slowly been lost through the ages. In the alternative a GM might home brew additional powers for a home campaign. It’s possible that some future PCI product could explore this area.

One further thought.

The val Virdan and val Emman have a partially merged set of bloodline powers. Presumably they both partially canabalized each other’s clans but neither couldn’t finish the other off. Similar to what happened to the val’Ossan but less complete.
