I had this list up on the previous forums, listing all known Val and Ul families, with their "major" or "minor" status, and their progenitor God. I thought I'd post this again.

Just for reference:

Major - Large population with much political power
Minor - Smaller population, typically having less political power
Endangered - Small population, either due to a new family or a dying family.
Extinct - Surviving Family members vanishingly rare, if any presently remain.

Val Families

val'Abebi - Althares - Major
val'Assante' - Illiir - Major
val'Baucisz - Sarish - Endangered
val'Borda - Cadic - Major
val'Cessari - Unknown - Endangered/Extinct
val'Dellenov - Saluwe' - Major
val'Emman - Nier - Major/Minor
val'Hamen - Sarish - Extinct
val'Haupt - Saluwe' - Minor
val'Holryn - Unknown - Major
val'Inares - Anshar - Major
val'Ishi - Beltine - Major
val'Mehan - Sarish - Major
val'Mordane - Neroth - Major
val'Ossan - Yarris - Major
val'Sheem - Larissa - Major
val'Sosi - Beltine - Endangered/Extinct
val'Sungha - Unknown - Minor
val'Tensen - Hurrian - Major
val'Trisin - Cadic - Minor (Extinct?)
val'Vasik - Illiir - Endangered - Based on the effectively unlimited number available through Kickstarter
val'Virdan - Nier - Major

ul'Hsin - Cadic - Major

ul'Jaya - Illiir - Major
ul'Nomai - Beltine - Major
ul'Rankin - Yarris - Major
ul'Shi - Larissa - Major
ul'Tai - Sarish - Unknown
ul'Tang - Nier- Major
ul'Wei - Althares - Major
ul'Zhang - Hurrian - Major
ul'Lo - Unknown - Minor/Endangered

The original list of Ul families listed 13 distinct families, of which only 8 are remembered by anyone. We still do not have an Ul family that we know of dedicated to Beltine, Neroth, or Saluwe' . Additionally, after the First Coryani-Khitani War, a whole Ul family was said to have been wiped out by the order of the Sleeping Emperor, and the name of this family is currently unknown (but it is not the Jaya, Shi, Wei, Hsin, or Zheng).

If anyone has the list of Ul's that Mr. Lopez posted on the old forums, I'd appreciate it!

the ul'Tang were of the bloodline of Hurrian as I recall. They were mentioned in the LA talk list.

I suspect the ul'Hsin are derived from Larissa, though that is speculation on my part.

The ul'Zheng (or Zhang, the spelling is different in a couple of places) are best known for the old "War Master" who served the now deceased Duke Victor val'Holryn of Tralia. Does that suggest an ul equivalent of the val'Holryn? I don't think so, but maybe ...

You don't have the ul'Wei yet who were/are scions of Altheres. I think.

That's all I have off the top of my head. I miss the old list too!

So, in the revealed History section of the Blessed Lands book, it is revealed that there were originally 'almost two score' Val families created. Two score means 40, which means there were somewhere in the neighbourhood of 35 to 39 families in the original 'batch' of Vals at the start of the Blood War. I thought I'd resurrect this thread to see if we could group-guess who these families are/were:

Known "Original Family":

1) val'Haupt (BL book history section)
2) val'Abebi (BL book history section)
3) val'Mehan (BL book history section)

Likely "Original Family"

4) val'Assante'
5) val'Borda
6) val'Inares
7) val'Mordane
8) val'Emman
9) val'Virdan
10) val'Tensen
11) val'Ishi
12) val'Ossan
13) val'Sheem
14) val'Dellanov

Possible "Original Family"

15) val'Tai (known to exist in the First Imperium)
16) val'Trisin (unknown, as little information is known)
17) val'Cessari (unknown, even less is known than the Trisin)
18) val'Shi (major Ul family of Khitan)
19) val'Zheng (major Ul family of Khitan)
20) val'Tang (major Ul family of Khitan)
21) val'Hsin (major Ul family of Khitan)
22) val'Wei (major Ul family of Khitan)
23) val'Jaya (major Ul family of Khitan)
24) val'Holryn (first reference in canon is at the END of the First Imperium)

This leaves somewhere from 11 to 15 'unknown' families on the list to reach the 'almost two score' number, assuming that all of these families were 'original' families.

Known "Not-Original Families"

val'Sosi (only about a half-century old)
val'Vasik (Only a few centuries old, has been mostly wiped out)
val'Hamen (Only existed as a 'living' family for a few decades, last known members were destroyed)
val'Sungha (made when val's and True Kio mix)
val'Baucisz (canon sources suggest they were 'late comers' to the party)

You know, "for science" I think we should resurrect the blood war method of stealing other family's power of the same divine nature, and then get one of each of the 12 families to try to absorb a Val'Holyrn. We could finally show what god they below to... or don't (dun dun DUN).

Also, I know a recent module had the Ul equivalent to the Val'Ossan in it, but I don't recall the name of the Ul family.

If you are referring to the ul'Zheng, their powers are far more in line with Hurrian than Yarris. Back on the old forums Henry was considering an Ul family of Yarris by the name of ul'Dagon, but this has not appeared in publication so it isn't canon (yet). Otherwise the only Ul's that have had 'screen time' are the ul'Shi (Larissa) as represented by ul'Shi Dao and I believe the head of the Khitani Church in the First City, and the ul'Jaya who appear to be Illiirites from A2-HP1 "Into the Blessed Lands". We have also received the names of the ul'Hsin (involved with the Jial of the Pheonix) and the ul'Wei (I believe these are Atharian Uls).

If we're guessing I would place the number of original Val families in the 34 to 36 range. I imagine there is an ul family for every god save Anshar. That's 11. There are 2 families for several gods (Cadic, Nier, Saluwe) which would add a total of 24 for 35. Now, were there 2 Val families associated with Anshar? Perhaps not given what we know of her. That could take it down to 34. If val'Holryn was an original that would bump to 36.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul

But there is nothing to say that some of the Ul families aren't the same as Val Families. After all we haven't seen any sign of there being Valinor of Altheres or Yarris, so it is possible that there is only one line - the same in both Val and Ul. After all, if there has always only been one then they were safe in the blood war. Considering the rather Asiatic bent to the Ul families it will be imperative to know whether the line of Altheres in Khitani (or really any family lines) appear similar to their Val equivalents.

I doubt that the Ul families are simply rebrands of the known 13 families. The History section of the BL book suggests that all the Ul families didn't participate in the Blood War or were less guilty than the modern Vals, which is why the Dreaming of Larissa chose them. Also, the same section of the book states that the Abebi were involved as well, and the guilt of one of that family lead to the peace among the surviving families. Since only like Vals (of specific gods) could eat each other, this means there was at least one other Altheran Val family.

Interesting thought: Real life name meanings of Val names in our world

Assante = Surname of Italian origin in our world. First reference is from the 1500's in Naples.

Abebi = Female name of African Yoruba origin, meaning "Asked For". Interesting note that Altherian names tend to be of Bantu origin, which is from the other side of the continent.

Haupt = German word for "Head", often used in titles such as the German Hauptman (their word for the military rank Major.

Virden = Norman family name which was brought to England. Possibly Danish or Norwegian in origin.

Emman = Given name, used in both males and females. Possible origin is in India or Persia, or as a contraction of the name Immanuelle.

Borda = A French surname.
