Onara online showed the Val Holryn symbol as the Tudor Rose.

Certain cryptic writings in the Blessed Land book reveal the symbol of the Val Cessari family...

I believe the symbol of the Val Tensen family is supposed to be the Shadow Lion...but I don't have a source to quote for that.

As I recall the Shadow Lion is the "sacred animal" of the val'Tensen family. Source is the old Codex Arcanis and I believe this was reprinted in the newer version. I doubt the animal is the symbol of the family and it would be nice to know if there is one. There may in fact may not be. I suspect if there was one Henry would have put it out back in the day. As for the Tudor rose I believe that to be to part of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Tralia. At least that's what it says on the button I have from GenCon 2004 (as I recall).

The Val Holryn family and the Duchy of Tralia are the same unit, the later formed around the former. I believe they are essential indistinguishable from each other.

While you are probably right I would like to hear that from an official source. I recall being told it was the coat of arms for the Duchy not the symbol of the family (by Eric Weiner I believe at the con where I bought the button). While the Bourbon coat of arms and the flag of France are similar the Tudor coat of arms and the English flag are not. So there is room to disagree. :-) I may well be wrong on this, it was over a decade ago. Still have the button though..."Speak softly and carry a Tralian Hammer." Gotta love that. It may be a speed 7 weapon but you got to respect the d12 damage die. :)

I am curious to see how this gets sorted out.

Fair enough.

For some Val families that are split by geography (for example the Val Ossan and Val Dellenov) I would suspect that the family symbol would be different from on the duchy or kingdom. The Val Ossan of Salantis aren't using the Milandesian dolphins I'm sure.

Just remembered that I think the Val Haupt symbol is the Swan. Think that's from either the old Codex or old module Where Ghosts of Legends Lie.

I was just thinking, do the Valinor that created the various families have a symbol? We know the gods do. Given they are "aspects" I would imagine some variation on the original would be appropriate. Perhaps the actual val family symbol pays tribute both to the parent god and valinor that the family owes its existence to? Food for thought, don't eat too much. ;)
