Over two years of regular play, and the Haunted by Nightmares flaw has consistently proven to be a monstrous pain in the ass. Usually, those Nightmares flaws turn out to be nothing. But with Eric made sure that isn't the case with this one. The flaw comes up every single game session, sometimes multiple times. No one ever seems to make the roll, saddling the player with an across the board penalty of -1 die to ALL actions. It's the only flaw that seems to impose such a consistent penalty — for my group anyway. I don't think it was meant to be as consistently debilitating as its proving to be, and maybe it is just us. We've fudged it, GM fiat-ed it, so now I'm going to fix it once and for all.

This won't help you poor souls in the Revelations game, but for any of you running home games, if you are running into the same problems we have been, you might consider this. Or let me know how you resolved it.

BTW, this thread on RPGnet was pretty helpful in tailoring the final version. It was nice to be able to compare so many variations of the same disadvantage. It made it easy to stitch the best parts together.

Yes, it is harsh. As a GM, I would never pass up the story telling aspects of that flaw.

Our issue is it's overly harsh compared to most other Flaws, and thus became a trap. This fix, we think, keeps all the potential of the original flaw, but brings it in line with a lot of other flaws. Plus, it's very easy to dial up the player agency aspect of the GM desires.
