Hey everyone,

For those of you who don't follow the blog, A Historian Goes to the Movies, this might pique your interest. The blogger is currently doing a big breakdown of the Salem tv series (gearing up for season 2: the witch war): who's real, who isn't, what's historically accurate, and what's pure Hollywood bunk. So far he's two entries in and it's terribly fascination.

Personally, I find the series a bit mediocre (what can I say? I'm a genre snob.), but it has some great visual grist for any Witch Hunter game. So for that, at least, it's worth watching on occasion. But this look at the series through a historical lense has just as much pure, meaty inspiration. Cotton Mather as a Lightbringer (a prodigy who graduated Harvard at 15 and became a reverend but was always interested in science, writing treatises on mathmatics and medicine? Holy crap yes please!)

Anyway, check it out! Well worth your time!
Tom

From what I know of the time frame, I'd place Cotton Mather firmly into the hands of the Adversary :P

I would think a "fallen" Witch Hunter would make for an interesting NPC. Especially if you don't see it coming....

I could go either way on this. In a setting where witches are real and those are awarded the power to discover and combat them, I would think the Salem Witch trials would play out very differently.

So I guess it comes down to what you feel makes a more interesting character. Or a more devious plot. After all, ignorance and superstition need not apply completely in this case.

Maybe the PCs actions in a mod decide whether Mather joins the Witch Hunters or the Adversary. That could be fun and scary!

Hello,

Frankly, while Cotton Mather was a terror in history, on the show it's his father, Increase Mather who fascinates me.

This is a Witch Hunter that teeters on the brink and may already be unwittingly doing the Adversary's work. That character is great to watch on the show. His intro scene is still my favorite of the series thus far.

Hmm I think Salem is on Netflix, if so I will have to check this out. Which episode are you referring to Henry?

Did a quick wiki search on Increase Mather. Some good stuff there if you read between the lines with an eye towards the game. The business with Robert Calef and his book, as well as Mather's involvement in politics seem interesting. By the way I have not been involved in the new campaign mainly for lack of time, but what year is the current campaign set in?

I see that the actor Stephen Lang plays Increase Mather on the series. I've been a fan of his for sometime, even before his big screen splash on Avatar. I will definitely have to check this out!
