Some talents and runes are described as: giving a bonus to all Arcanum Action Skill Rolls for casting spell XYZ.

Does this bonus apply to both:
-- casting the spell, e.g., rolling the CTN or better on an Arcanum roll?
-- determining the effect of the spell, e.g., rolling the target's defense or better on the subsequent Arcanum roll?

Thanks.

Anytime you roll an Arcanum Roll to CAST a spell, so CTN and attack rolls is my read. Any damage of spell EFFECTS has nothing to do with casting it, but rather determining what it does AFTER the casting.

Thanks for the clarification.

That makes a lot of talents/runes less than useful. Really, how often do PCs not auto-cast?

On the positive side, it reduces my list of "talents/runes I really, really want" :-)

It all depends on how much you want to pump into the spell... adding adaptations you can quickly raise the CTN making it nearly impossible to cast.

I had a player that would always "go for broke" when he used a spell in combat (multiple targets, more damage, and so on)

I hear you …

But, my dice run cold :-( I've learned this lesson the hard way. Most of the time when I've tried to "go for broke" and don't auto-cast, the spell fizzles.

Plus, for the geek in me, the numbers just don't work. If I've got a 50% chance of making the spell casting roll, and another 50% chance of affecting the target, that means there's a 25% chance of the spell succeeding. I'd rather go for a smaller effect -- eliminating the first roll because it's within my passive -- and having a 50% chance. Maybe I'm just being too practical?

I think it has a lot to do with what you are trying to accomplish...for just regular combat where you're doing damage, etc. along with everyone else, passive rules.

If you're trying for the AE, 30' range to Blind all the bad guys for an easy win, go for broke!

You mean an Area-effect Blind? Don't know of a talent to adapt Diminish Senses to affect an area. Is there a way or a different spell that I've missed?

So, if it was critical, I'd cast Diminish Senses (30', 1 target) and use a Fate Point. Not sure if most GMs would allow it though.

Was just using that as an example: If you really need a killer spell to turn the tide of battle, it's worth the risk. If it's just routine, probably not.

If you were a big time primal caster you could create an advanced spell out of elemental bolt and diminish senses and use the adaptation in elemental bolt to make the advanced spell AoE.

That would be amazing ... or really gross. Depending on what side of the attack you were on.
