When a ss'ressen is in legendary ss'ressen scale with an unassailable rune does the legendary and the rune stack with the +1 boost to natural armor. Granting a +3 or +4 depending on the rune or is it a static +1.

Good question.

I believe the special +1 bonus to natural AR is essentially an unnamed bonus, though it certainly doesn't say that anywhere. I personally would allow it to stack. Not sure how others feel. Again, its not spelled out anywhere. Your mileage with GMs might vary.

With the rules as written, the legendary and rune boost the AR value (not NAR) so you still either get NAR+1 (no legendary/rune) total or AR+1 (with legendary/rune) total. I don't see any issue with legendary and runes on Ss'ressen Scale adding to NAR (or at least the NAR bonus) but that's not currently how it's written.

The only difference between worn AR and natural AR is that one is worn and the other is natural. They are both AR. The +1 to Natural Armour is a trait of the item, and not some sort of magical bonus (similar to how a Fine Quality sword deals +1 damage). As such, the Rune would stack because they are from difference sources.

That said, most people cannot add Runes to their own bodies to boost their own Natural Armour except in specific situations (ie: the il'Huan) because apparently they are not considered Good-quality items in their own right. I think this is an example of objectification on the part of PCI.

Natural Armor: Some creatures possess scales or thick skin; these creatures possess a Natural Armor Rating. This Natural Armor Rating does not stack with armor worn by the creature. If at any time a Hero or creature with Natural Armor elects to wear armor, raise their highest Armor Rating by 1.

My reading of this (and the entry for AR) is that AR and NAR are two different statistics so, for this example, we get:
  • AR = 2 (base) + 1 (legendary) + 1 (rune) = 4
  • NAR = 3 (base) + 1 (item) = 4
  • final = 5 (either 4 NAR + 1 AR or 4 AR + 1 NAR)

However, I'd be happy if I'm wrong as that kind of shafts Ss'ressen (though an Ashen Hide with Dragon Hide and Ss'ressen Scale already has total AR 7 iirc).

The +1 to Natural AR from Ss'ressen Scale 'stacks' with the combined AR+NAR of the Ss'ressen. So a Ss'ressen wearing Ss'ressen Scale Armor would have:

NAR (3) + (1 for Ss'ressen Scale) + AR (1) = 5. This is +1 better than they would normally have and the equivalent of adding the 2 together. I don't think Rune benefits add after this combo, so it would seem you are limited to the +5, yes, unless you have some way to increase your natural AR.

No, an Ashen Hide/Black Talon with the talent and Ssressen Scale Armor would have a 6.
Base 3 +1 Dragon Hide +1 Natural AR (bonus from scale armor) +1 from combining the armor with Natural AR.

The only ones I know of are Dark-Kin (talent gives them 2 NAR) or spells (Hide of the Beast or similar).
