Hello,

There is no need for errata.

A reading of the Former Gladiator background under nationality states: "Choose from arena locations" with the key words being arena location. I take that to mean that for the armor, your "regional armor" is gladiatorial armor.

true, I'm stretching the meaning of the wording a bit, but that was the intent. You are "from" the arena and while you may have trained in Coryan, Canceri or the Hinterlands, you picked up your martial skills in the arena. As you'll note, specific weapons are picked out for you. The simplest solution is that you forgo any other type of armor and are trained and own gladiatorial armor.

Done.

To make it a simple errata:
Quote:
Former Gladiator
Special:Replace one of your Archetype Armour Training (ta) with Armour Training (Gladiator Armour) (ta).

Henry,

I cannot be more appreciative of that ruling but does that mean a "Archetype: Martial" Former Gladiator looses access to the "All Armors and Sheilds from your starting Nation?" It does not effect my character concept in the slightest but it would be good info to know.

A.J.,

That's correct - you can either have one or the other. Given that the point of contention is that the Former Gladiator has Gladiatorial armor, it makes sense to simplify it as Southern Skies listed above.

However - to be clear, this is just how I would fix the problem on the fly or rule if the question came up at a home game.

I'll suggest this fix to the LA campaign heads and IF they agree, then they'll write something official for the campaign. Until then, for the Living Campaign, you'll have to play it as written.

Henry I respect your position, but I think I disagree with it here, based on the description of gladatorial armor, its not suppsed to be something people are proficient in (ARPG 248), its just for show.

the penalty for wearing armor that your non proficient in is 2x the bunk as a negative to most everythng roll related, so I think that too is in keeping with making a show of things.

just my opinion on the matter

Gladiatorial Armor
Description: This armor is more for show than practical
use. Each set of armor is unique and is often a hodge-podge
collection of different kinds of armor. While some suits
consist of armored sleeves with decorated helms, others
consist of leather versions of lorica set with brass fittings for a
more theatrical look. Regardless, all of these armors provide
little actual protection and are more for costume than proper
battle.
Many ex-gladiators still utilize parts of their old armor
to augment the look of better and heaver armors.

Qualities: Nil

Arcanis: World of Shattered Empires pg 248

Yes the armor is for show but it clearly is still armor that has been worn in the arena. When your entire career is spent in that armor. (Remember a Former Gladiator does not get so much as Common Garb.) You would know how use it. That is common sense.

IC: You know, has anyone considered that this is only a problem for those that "cheat" in the arena? I'm talking about those who go about casting spells (Arcane and Divine). Yea, I'm sure that there are plenty of Harvesters in the audiance of the typical area fight. I bet they pay well for arcane slaves. That and I'm sure that those pompus agents of the dead gods just love to watch their "priests" count themselves among the condemed to die. Then there are those that are so enamored with themselves that they can't devote enought time to practicing their skills (experts)? Oh, and don't get me started on how the altherians and archer types endanger the spectators with their long range weapons. Yea, the only Gladiator worthy of freedom is one that devotes every waking moment to his craft. That is afterall what the crowds pay for.

OOC: I sincerly apploigize for the rant above. Remember Tiberius was dropped on his head a few times.....

IC response by Jax Swiftblade the completely magic-less Human Former Gladiator, Master of Twin Gladius' and Jack of Knives (Potential Character for the upcoming Contest- By the way Josh it needs a better name then "the Contest"): I could not agree more. When your blood is poring out on the Arena sand there is nothing but you and your opponent. The god's don't care. They are nothing but a tool by the Aristocracy to keep the masses in line. I have been on both sides of the line in the sand. I have been the slave and I have been the champion who won his freedom so I know what I am talking about.

(He doesn't have any magical ability and would completely agree with you about the gods)

this is a good case for clarification/errata and I'll add it to the Ask a Stat-monkey document

I have been chipping away at it and should have a draft to send to the PCI staff soon for internal review..
