Apologies, I'm sure this has been answered somewhere before, but the search feature is being unkind to me this afternoon.

Currently on my character's bow I have an Exceptional Frost rune and a Fine Celerity rune, but once he hits 3.1 I'd like to reverse those quality levels (only because of the limitation of 1 Exceptional rune on an Exceptional item).

Originally I paid 10Gc for the Frost rune and 5Gc for the Celerity, but how does the cost of upgrading and downgrading work (I've plumb forgotten)?

The most logical way, to me, would be the Runesmith swaps my Exceptional Frost for a Fine Frost "out of the kindness of his heart" and then pay 5Gc to upgrade the Celerity rune to Exceptional.

I suppose I could see an argument for getting at least a slight refund from the downgraded rune, but really, I got my use out of it and it was well worth the gold, so I more see it as a sunk cost.

I believe exceptional runes cost 15 gp since they are (usually) tier 3 and the cost iirc is 5 gp per tier.

It's possible in years of play that one of my PCs has met some NPC somewhere in Arcanis that has done something out of the goodness of their heart Hmmmmm. Can't seem to name him or her at the moment.... :P

I am not entirely up to speed on runes but I believe each rune is "unique" and a discrete unit...and as such not upgrade-able. I believe what you need to do is pay to move both runes off your item (you can sell them if you wish which would recapture their cost) and have the new ones put on.

Probably not what you want to hear. Sorry!

This was my understanding as well. Runes can not be upgraded or downgraded (with the exception of Scaling runes, which are quite rare). If you have a Fine rune and you want an Exceptional rune of the same type, you have to spend the full amount to purchase it.

The benefit, however, is that you could then pay the 2 Gc to transfer the old rune to a different piece of equipment.

Eric. & Akira are correct. unless they specifically say so, Rune's cannot be upgraded/downgraded. You would need to purchase a new rune.

I wonder if the nature of runic magic means that tampering with them once set is more dangerous that creating a whole new one. That would seem like a good in game explanation for why no upgrade/downgrade. I always got the impression from reading the FIM intros that magic item creation is a lot trickier and more dangerous than the 3.5 version. Just my two cents here. :)

No, it's just that if you tamper with them you are likely to rune them.... :)
