By RAW there is no reason why a PC can not "Strike the Rod" (leadership II) to settle horses or other allied beasts of burden that have failed a mettle check. But the RAW for Leadership II "Strike the Rod" is a DC 20 Persuasion Check. Persuasion doesn't not affect animal intelligence. Can Beast Lore (appropriate) be used instead?

Alternatively, can Draft Horses be trained with the Fearless Trick?

I ask because I have a LOT of horses in my follow on baggage train. As humorous as it would be to watch 30 gp worth of horse and tack go running off into the sunset with my wagons in tow, it would only be prudent to take precautions.

My 100% non-official answer would be that no, you can not use Leadership on frightened animals. The spirit of Leadership is that you are using your words to inspire your allies. Frightened animals, who can not understand what you are saying, would simply hear another voice yelling in an already frightening situation.

If I were GMing, I would probably give you an opportunity to use Beast Lore to calm your animals, assuming that you yourself succeeded on your Mettle check :)

I don't see why you couldn't train a draft horse to be fearless, but I'm also not entirely up to speed on the animal training rules.

Good point on Strike the Rod. But then it would logically follow that you can't use Leadership Rallying Cry on Animals either. But cracking a whip would certainly have the effect of that Leadership I usage.

Now I am only asking now because it might be an issue at the Arcanicon Special. As it stands Acturis has two wagons, a carriage, twelve draft horses, and two slaves going with him to Canceri. I can't imagine a "boring" outcome. Admittedly that is kinda like walking up to Matt and handing over my PC's retirement fund. So I'm looking for prudent options to protect my imprudent investment.

Leave them at home? Or at least in Tralia or something like that. I'm sure he can suffer the hardship of a few days without his caravans and slaves.

Too practical. And no, such hardship is beneath him.

Besides the vault of larrisa had some really big items in it. I'm thinking about the wedding bed. Having the horse power rope and pulleys to get something like that out of an axunite temple would likely fetch a huge bounty.
