The talent mentions that you raise your holy symbol and cast. Question, it this like a wand where you can cast with a weapon in your other hand? Or do you need a free hand to use this talent?

Thanks

You should still need a free hand, so no weapon. Your weapon is your faith and the spells you wield with it.

At least that's my understanding.

It hasn't come up much. I've treated it "as a wand."

Actually I've assumed you need a standard hand free (i.e. Not taken up with a shield or greatsword) and the free hand "somantic component" includes raising up the Holy Symbol.

LOL ... I just came down on the other side of this. But I'm not hugely attached to my position. As much as I conceptually like the idea of your faith as your weapon why doesn't raising the holy symbol count as the somantic part of the spell?

I have this talent. I always pictured Haakon standing there with his quarterstaff in one hand, raising his holy symbol of Beltine in the other hand and shouting "The power of Beltine compels you!" :) as I drop the Grey Lady's wrath on their unrighteous souls. At least that's how I see it working. The somatic portion of the spell as it were.

Ha. If you've got a quarterstaff in one hand then I'm pretty sure the line is: "You Shall Not Pass!"

This is how I've adjudicated it, but now that Hat has spoken I'm wondering if I've been too generous.

Thing is I need to "drop" the weapon to used the symbol since it's a polearm, and I have to spend ticks to "ready" it so I think being even more restrictive is a bit harsh. If that's the case I guess I'll have to get a sling for my quarterstaff. :(

I happen to have the rules at work and it does say you need a free hand. So I guess I gotta get a sling for my staff 'cause they don't have scabbards for them. :( I think I'll make the bottom end pointed so I can ram it into the ground as an action to free up the hand. 'Cause I'm not about to drop a fervidite staff on the ground, I've got too much gold invested in that thing. :)

On the other hand I always had the impression that Cants depended on a rote method of speaking the words in just the right order. The Eldritch casters always seemed the ones doing all the hand waving. Still it would seem to put us divine casters with two handed weapons at a bit of a disadvantage. Still I agree with Paul that my spells are MY weapons. I do use the staff in combat but not near as often as spells.

I've been looking at this talent as well for some pre-gen builds.

Personally, I think it should be treated as a 'wand' for casting, as requiring a hand free + presenting the Remnant is quite onerous for what you get.

That's kind of my thought and how I would rule at the table as a GM.
