Ok. SO..... I noticed that the entry for a ladder does not exist. You can buy one, but there is no description. Obviously since nearly everyone is familier with what a ladder is, would be needed.... save for one detail. How long are they? I mean I'm sure it is possible to get several of the various types of wooden ladders for the nominal 1sc listed. But what is the longest wooden ladder you can buy for that price? 10'? 20'? Or for a rope ladder 100'? |

Well, backwards calculate: Ladder listed is 20 lbs and 4 Encumbrance. 30' of Rope is 5 lbs and 3 Encumbrance. This means that the ladder weighs 4x the mass of 30' of rope but is only 1/3 more difficult to lug around. I'd say that the ladder cannot be more than 10' high since it is easy to lug around, and probably made of wood to reflect its 1 Sc coin price. That said, I cannot say this with any authority. |

Bah. 10' is a reasonable guess most GMs should be comfortable with. 5' is too short to be useful and 15-20 is too awkward for a single person to carry around. 100' of rope ladder should cost more than 1 silver. On to the real questions about the secret lives of ladders: Do you think anyone in Altheria has built a clockwork ladder that extends and contracts as per the users wishes? Do you think anyone makes gnomish ladders with less symmetrical steps for people with unusualy limb proportions? How large might such a specialized market grow? Do the nerothians of Canceri even use ladders? Or do you think it's more efficient for the to just have skeletons to make a human pyramid you climb up? |

So, why I care. Realizing that I can't quickly dig a ditch and palisade around every camp prior to nightfall, I started looking to alternative ways to set a perimeter. then I realized, if you turn a ladder on its side and prop it up with some crates, or perhaps a makeshift kickstand you have a rapidly deployable temporary fence. I needed to know how long a standard ladder was to know how long to make the terrain features I need to go along with my carriage and wagon mini's. I also needed to figure out how many wagons to dedicate to perimeter defense....ect... Why you ask? Well if I'm going to go through the trouble to detail how I setup camp, I need a way to describe the setup to the GM. That means minis. So this is all really an exercize I need to do to justify my miniture budget..... Now, the follow up question.... How big is a standard tent? I'd like two in the 10'*15' size. One to sleep in, the other to use as an office. |

I looked up a few sites for the weight of canvas tents. The average came out at around 1.5 lbs / sq.ft (including poles). Sample size was 81 sq.ft (9x9) to 222 sq.ft (17x13). So the 20 lb tent in the book is around 30 sq.ft (or 4'x7'). A close match was: 15x12, 180sq.ft, 121 lbs. The size/weight was more efficient at the larger sizes. For game purposes, I would suggest: Pavilion (15'x10'), 150 sc, 120 lbs, Enc 12. Possibly a price discount for efficiency (75-80 Sc 'feels' right). |

OK thanks. I thought that the tent in the book was a two man pup tent. That confirms it. I guess for simplicity of rules I should pay for Fine Quality tents. I h |
