Cody is correct in his answer. Also, remember that Sorcery runes are specialized to the spell. Common sense should dictate that the particular runesmith you find should (presumably) be able to cast the spell. We do not list them out for each instance...but, Cody said, you either need and elder runesmith or have an elder caster assisting the runesmith. (of course, i am sure Elorii elders or Malfelans might be interested in finding out if there are elder casters who are giving access to Elorii magics to "lesser" races).

Or find a Dwarven Runesmith (who can inscribe any rune without the spell prereqs).

I had worked up one to play before I found out they were illegal for campaign play. :(

I was told at one point that one of the greatest runesmiths in the known world was in the first city, and that we could purchase any rune we wanted in modules that start in the first city. That is the information I've been working off of with my purchases. In response to this thread, I managed to get my hands on a first city module and found that all it says in the module is:

Quote:
Runesmiths
In a small series of interconnected buildings marked prominently with an arcane sigil works the most learned Runemaster of the First City, Elothym Varythrin of Capharra, and his small group of
journeymen and apprentices.

Which is pretty nonspecific to what can be done and what can't. I would assume pretty much all divine spells (and sarishan) can be gotten in runes, considering that priests of all types are common in the first city. I would assume most arcane casters might be more cagey about offering their services. But those are only assumptions, and different people assume radically different things. Should there be a ruling about runes? Is it pretty much true that we can get any non-spell rune that we might want?

Thanks for clearing that up guys. Given the story difficulties in aquiring this item I don't see Acturis putting forth the effort anymore. I'm trying to do something Acturis would do as he currently exists. That is to say what a coryani lapdog would do. Looks like I'm back to slaves with shovels. :D

Some adventures specify what a runesmith can do, and some should be common sense I would think. For example, if you are in Savona, you almost certainly will not be able to find someone who could scribe a Fire Dragon-specific rune. Naeraanth, maybe. Lampeltis, definitely. but Savona, no. Similarly, having specific Elder Spells (especially uniquely Elder Spells) scribed outside of Ssethregore or the Elorii nations will be rather difficult to find I would think.

This doesn't mean it is impossible to get one, and in the living campaign we may just say "sure, you can do it" for simplicity (I can't promise this is what the answer will be, however). However, it is something to consider when choosing your runes.

To follow up on this request for clarifications, I know that Treasures for the Ages says (pg 4) that all the optional rules for runes in green are in effect in the campaign, I assume this means runes scale by tier? The pdf version I purchased doesn't have color.

All optional rules in green are standard for the Legends of Arcanis Campaign. For more information
on the campaign and its library of free adventures see http://www.LegendsofArcanis.com

By a literal reading, none of the optional rules are standard for the campaign then. I just checked the physical book and it is black & white as well (eg no green rules).

I suspect the book was written in color but the final was rendered bw for cost.

Regardless, Spell runes
only work with non-unique spells and those with CTNs.

I assume 'unique' means Exotic or Secret, but this is the only restriction I can see for the rune for Base, Sustained, etc.

No. Unique means precisely that. The unique spells to each Arcanum source. See the Arcanum section (pg 342-344) and the Unique Spells section (pg 354).
