FiM states that if you have an elemental rune and an exceptional quality Sorcery rune on a weapon you can functionally turn that weapon into a wand of that element, doing extra damage. How does this work with spells that bypass AR, like Castigate? Would the elemental damage bypass? |

As the rules for Wands still apply to the Runes, the base spell must bypass AR for the bonus damage to also bypass. Only spells you cast that use the appropriate element will receive the extra damage. ie. Elemental Bolt (Fire) can benefit. Castigate on its own, cannot benefit from elemental runes. You would need to somehow take it as an Arcane spell, apply the Adaptation: Elemental Empowerment (ta) and THEN the appropriate elemental rune. This combo is possible with various Primal spells (Pound of Flesh, Heat Wave etc). If you're a Divine caster, Sorcery+Elemental Runes have little utility unless you take the right spells (which generally goes against your primary role, weakening your non-elemental damage sources). |

Actually, no. Quote: Special: A weapon inscribed with both this Rune and an elemental Rune allows the weapon’s wielder to apply the effects of the elemental Runes to spells that deal damage, effectively making this weapon into a wand for this purpose. If spell’s damage type matches that of the elemental Rune, the normal weapon effect of the Rune is applied.. If it does not match, the wielder may still apply the effect, but doing so increases spell’s Strain by 1. Hence my question. |

Strait forward then. +X damage, using the base spell's rules. |

But does it (I generally assume not) bypass AR like the spell's base damage, which was my question? |

If the base spell bypasses AR, the bonus damage also bypasses AR. |

Another question: If this functionally turns your weapon into a wand, do you need to have a free hand to cast? I recall reading that it was generally accepted that you may hold a wand and still be treated as having that hand free. |

I agree with Southernskies interpretation of damage. I also think it's essentially straight forward...and even with gritty rules +1 spd for +1 damage (with something like Cadtigate) isn't a trade off I think we need to worry about. But I don't think the tune gets you around the need for having a free hand. There is specifically the language "for this purpose" right after it says it functionally turns your weapon into a wand. |
