Random thought question.

If I have a Sustained Cone spell running (ie. adapted Heat Wave), when paying the sustain cost can you change the template location?

I presume yes, as you can Sustain spells while using a Shift movement.

I'm not immediately sure how I feel about that....I would not rubber stamp this idea. Moving the orientation of a cone is a lot more dynamic than shifting your AoE over 5 feet. It gives a vastly improved ability to target and the exclude.

OTOH if you are projecting the cone then yeah, as a fluff matter it makes perfect sense you can change the direction you are pointing.

I'd like to see how that plays out on a table or two before committing myself to a strong opinion.

I'm with Eric on this one. Sounds like the caster has a lot on his plate. Even if he could do it there'd be consequences like additional speed, strain etc. Perhaps even a new Casting roll might be required to reflect the additional effort involved. I can't say that I've seen adaptations added to a sustained spell in game before.

Unless the spell specifies otherwise, you may not switch targets on a Sustained spell. In this case, a Sustained AoE cannot be moved to a new area.

Ok. As a 0' (Cone 15'), it can't be moved (the target is the 0' location).

So the spell would need to be "Self" to move (as the 'target' is the caster).

.
.
.
What is the shortest range between Self and 0' for an Advanced spell? I currently have (almost impossible to cast at T1 as Sustained):

Quote:
Sirocco (Heat Gale)
Base Spells: Gale Force Winds + Heat Wave
Category: Advanced
CTN: 23
Speed (Strain): 5 (+6) (Elder)
Range: Self (15’ Cone)
Duration: Instant
Defense: Fortitude
Effect: Any Target you affect loses d4 (Primary) Stamina, with creatures in medium or heavy armor suffering an additional d4.
Any Target you successfully affect is pushed to the outside edge of your cone, where they must perform an Athletics (Balance) (Qu) Action Skill Roll against your Passive Arcanum Value or fall Prone.
Creatures who hit a solid immovable object before reaching the spell’s outer edge suffer damage as if they fell the distance they travelled.
Adaptation: Increase the CTN by 3, Speed by 2, and Strain by 4 to change this spell into a Sustained spell with a Sustain Speed of 3. The Sustained Effect remains the same as the
spell’s primary effect.
Adaptation: Increase the CTN by 5 and Strain by 2 to change the Range to 25’ Cone.
Adaptation: Increase the CTN by 3 to change the Range to 30’ (1 Target).
