Cody,

The answer is a resounding No.

I have no idea what Pete was trying to accomplish when writing that example, but you CANNOT be an Arcane and Divine caster.

Period.

If need be I'll have Pete errata that example.

Existing restrictions only applied to the 'Arcane Spell Casting' and 'Divine Spell Casting' talents. There's a couple of talents that weren't affected that now will be (that give you a 'free' spell as part of the Path or Talent gained).

Figured I would put this into an existing thread instead of starting a new one. I seem to recall that you can be both a divine caster and a psion (the only exception to the rule that you can't be arcane and divine). I was tossing around an idea for a character, and I just wanted to run it by the forums to make sure I'm not missing a rule somewhere.

Val character
Martial (a) with Undisciplined Psion (b)
Sword Saint (p) or Templar Itinerant (p) to gain access to Divine Spell Casting (ta)

I realize that this isn't the fastest way to get spell casting, but I was thinking about a primarily martial character who has access to a couple of self-buffing spells (Inertial Shield and Body of the Warrior, for a start).

Is there anything inherently problematic with this? I'm not terribly interested by arguments over whether it is 'optimal', just want to make sure it is rules compliant.

Thanks

Works for me. Without being an Expert (or one of the casting archetypes) I found it is difficult to stay "up to speed" in two types of casting (good ranks in skills, taking Divine and Arcane Spell Casting every tier), but if all you want is a few spells--or to specialize in one and have a few spells for the other--this is a perfectly viable build.

I thought that Psionic Priest was a story Archetype and Psionics + Divine was allowed? There is even a Path based on this.

You're correct. It is. The issue was that with the way Paths were configured it was possible to be a non-Psionic Arcane Caster and take a path that provided Rudimentary prayers for example. There was a restriction on the Spellcasting Talents, but not on the Talents that provided access to a single spell which also in turn opened up the option for adding additional spells through the Learn Spell talent.

With a sweep of his hat,

Paul
