Have I missed it in the rules or the campaign guide? Are their rules covering access and cost for spell casting services? I've got several possible uses for purchasing spells, but the one I'll use for example is purchasing casting of "Thrall" on a prisoner to make them cooperative. How would that be handled? My example is not time sensitive? (i.e. I could take the being prisoner in the module, but afterward could afford to just take it trussed up across land to a major city for interrogation that isn't module relevant.) I've been thinking that I would like to capture a segarthian troll and learn their language, but since they are entirely uncooperative, I assume the only way I could do so would be to enchant one into cooperating in teaching me their language. MY character is a psionicist, trained in a family's psionic tradition, so I assume he knows people with more skill than himself who could put him in contact with someone with the spell, but that they wouldn't be willing to do this for free. So are there guidelines for how to go about it? |

Hello, I assume that this is for a Home Campaign. Unfortnuately, there are no guidelines for such that I know of. |

Spell casting would not (generally) be openly advertised due to the Ymandragorans, and presently there are no rules to allow for it. 1) Eldritch/Elder Spells - You almost certainly would not be able to find someone to 'cast a spell for you' using these traditions anywhere in the civilized world because of threat of exposure. 2) Divine Spells - If you are a member of a specific church, you may be able to purchase spells from their clergy, but I wouldn't expect them to give these out to just anyone. Perhaps 1 Gc/Tier of spell/casting (discount for Priests and Templars?) as a guide if it is eventually allowed? Sarishans may get you to make a Sarishan Oath to do something in exchange, though. . . 3) Psionic Spells - These are probably a bit more mercenary than any of the others, and would probably be the MOST likely to sell their gifts than other casters. 4) Primal Spells - These spells are already given to the caster in exchange for selling their souls (effectively) to powerful beings. Them then selling these powers to OTHERS may cause. . . complications to that relationship (could still be done, though, I'm sure). |

This would have to be specifically available and allowed in an adventure as there are no rules for this in the campaign. Sorry. |

Eldritch and Elder would make sense to be difficult, but I assume eldritch characters in the sanctorum might have connections, and Elorii elder casters would have mentors back in their homelands, etc. Churches seem obvious for people wanting to get spells from Psionics I can see being difficult to find, but as I said, my character is a psionic caster, and the text seems to indicate that psionic casters are ususally trained in some sort of school/organization, it would seem that they should have contacts that they may be able to find a caster of the appropriate spell if desired. Primal I can see being difficult as well since they are potentially hunted by the Church as well; but I assume if you were in the hinterlands and had the balls to approach the appropriate organization, you might be able to at least ask - though you could get killed doing so as well. And then there is the standard issue of a shaman character knowing other shamans (a teacher, etc) who theoretically should be know people who might be able to cast a desired spell. |

Would it be possible if I tried it at an interactive or BI or some other event moderated by PCI staff? I got the idea after Arcanicon since the delve was attacked by Trolls. Sadly I thought of it too late to do at the convention... ![]() |

Eldritch and Elder would make sense to be difficult, but I assume eldritch characters in the sanctorum might have connections, and Elorii elder casters would have mentors back in their homelands, etc. Personally, I would view the Sanctorum only giving spell casting to people for a specific reason, in which case they probably wouldn't charge for it in the first place (you need it for a mission, etc). For just "random" things, the Sanctorum probably wouldn't do spellcasting because it exposes them to the Harvesters. After all, you can see a spell cast upon someone just as easily as a caster with "Discern residue", and all you have to do to track it back to the source would be follow them or interrogate them. As for an Elder Master, the VAST majority of them would be in the Elorii nations, and therefore WELL outside the reach of a playable character. Quote: Churches seem obvious for people wanting to get spells from Not necessarily. Divine Spells are viewed as Gifts from the Gods, and (depending on the sect/Church) might not be given out to random people without a VERY good reason. Magic gives the Church power, so they would probably parcel that power out to others grudgingly or at very high (relatively) costs. That said, you'd probably get a Sarishan or a Dark Triumvirate Priest who would be more willing to be. . . mercenary about this, but that may bring other costs into the picture, too. Quote: Psionics I can see being difficult to find, but as I said, my character is a psionic caster, and the text seems to indicate that psionic casters are ususally trained in some sort of school/organization, it would seem that they should have contacts that they may be able to find a caster of the appropriate spell if desired. As I said, I see Psionics to be the most likely to actually 'sell' their powers to others. They are (most often) trained by secret groups within their own family, so they would have LOTS of contacts within their family of higher levels of power. Similarly, Psionics are rarely hunted by the Harvesters, and the Church (apparently, a little grudgingly based on fluff) accepts Psionic magic as not heretical (as it does with Primal, Elder, and Eldritch) so a lot of the opposition to selling it would be gone. Quote: Primal I can see being difficult as well since they are potentially hunted by the Church as well; but I assume if you were in the hinterlands and had the balls to approach the appropriate organization, you might be able to at least ask - though you could get killed doing so as well. This one could go a lot of ways, and depends a lot on what side of the Ehtzara you are ![]() |
