Part of the ignoring prerequisites is due to its positioning in character generation. I'd agree with Josh that delaying that (which I'm not sure you're even allowed to do) to Step 9 would mean you'd have to meet the prerequisites.

I play an expert shaman.
The spell casting is slowly becoming secondary as pig herding, ( re skinned attack dogs) and knowledge monkey be com my primary focus.

Some day I hope to be able to have the skill to do open heart surgery while in the middle of combat!

Okay, so if I delay the talents until step 9, and have 3 ranks in any lore skill, then I can take Prest, and ASC and get all the universal spells as an expert?

Yes. If you take Prest in archetype, you'll only get base universal spells but if you take both Prest and ASC (or DSC) in step 9 then you get all universal spells (but must meet the prereqs for Prest).

I remember this coming up on the old forums in the shaman discussions and again in the Learn Martial Technique discussions. Archetype talents must be chosen at the step they are gained.

You can't. The holding talents back part was a throwback to CSE rules that never came out.

Good call.

Hey folks --

I've read this thread multiple times, and I'm still missing the part where an Expert (or Martial) Awakened Scion gets the access to take Arcane Spell Casting [Limited]: Psionic.

(I know Expert makes it easier to fulfill the Prestidigitation and Arcanum skill requirements for ASC. I don't care about the basic/advanced Universal spell mechanic which is now clear in the proposed errata. I'm just focusing on the fact that nothing I've seen allows you to break the [Limited] descriptor.)

Should Awakened Scion explicitly grant this access as a Special, the way Shaman Initiate does, and the way Initiate of the Gods does for DSC?

Is there something that I'm missing? A ruling from the defunct boards, perhaps?

Thanks!

No confusion, you are right. The Awakened Scion background DOES NOT grant access to the limited talent Arcane Spell Casting [psionic]. If you wish to become awakened and wield psionics via the Arcane Spell Casting talent then you need to go through one of four hoops:

A) The Arcane Archetype. (Personally the Arcane Archetype is my least favorite of the Archetypes)
B) Take the Undisciplined Psion background from Codex of Heroes (must be Expert or Martial and have no other spell casting at creation).
C) Take the Spontaneously Awakened Path
D) Have a special character cert (through a Kickstarter, or for campaign service) that gives you an additional option.

While the Awakened Scion background does not get rid of the limited condition it still has a lot of good stuff for an Expert or Martial character who is going to become psionically active down the road.
